August 15, 2010 Sermon

00:02 → 00:06

Our text is taken from the Epistle to the Romans,

00:06 → 00:09

where we read from Chapter 14

00:09 → 00:12

beginning with Verse 13:

00:12 → 00:16

THEREFORE LET US STOP PASSING JUDGMENT ON ONE ANOTHER.

00:16 → 00:19

INSTEAD, MAKE UP YOUR MIND

00:19 → 00:22

NOT TO PUT ANY STUMBLING BLOCK

00:22 → 00:25

OR OBSTACLE IN YOUR BROTHER'S WAY.

00:25 → 00:29

AS ONE WHO IS IN THE LORD JESUS, I AM

00:29 → 00:32

FULLY CONVINCED THAT NO FOOD IS UNCLEAN

00:32 → 00:35

IN ITSELF. BUT IF ANYONE REGARDS

00:35 → 00:39

SOMETHING AS UNCLEAN, THEN FOR HIM

00:39 → 00:42

IT IS UNCLEAN. IF YOUR BROTHER IS DISTRESSED

00:42 → 00:45

BECAUSE OF WHAT YOU EAT, YOU ARE NO LONGER

00:45 → 00:49

ACTING IN LOVE. DO NOT BY YOUR EATING

00:49 → 00:52

DESTROY YOUR BROTHER FOR WHOM CHRIST DIED.

00:52 → 00:55

DO NOT ALLOW WHAT YOU CONSIDER GOOD

00:55 → 00:58

TO BE SPOKEN OF AS EVIL.

00:58 → 01:02

FOR THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS NOT A MATTER OF EATING AND

01:02 → 01:05

DRINKING, BUT OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, PEACE

01:05 → 01:08

AND JOY IN THE HOLY SPIRIT,

01:08 → 01:12

BECAUSE ANYONE WHO SERVES CHRIST IN THIS WAY

01:12 → 01:15

IS PLEASING TO GOD AND APPROVED BY MEN.

01:15 → 01:18

LET US THEREFORE MAKE EVERY EFFORT

01:18 → 01:22

TO DO WHAT LEADS TO PEACE AND TO

01:22 → 01:25

MUTUAL EDIFICATION. This is the Word of our Lord.

01:25 → 01:28

Let us pray:

01:28 → 01:31

This is the day that the Lord has made.

01:31 → 01:35

Let us rejoice and be glad in it. Amen.

01:35 → 01:38

Text taken from the HOLY BIBLE: NEW INTERNATIONAL

01:38 → 01:41

VERSION 1978, used by permission of

01:41 → 01:45

Zondervan Bible Publishers.

01:45 → 01:48

Dear Followers of our Lord and Savior,

01:48 → 01:51

Jesus Christ.

01:51 → 01:55

Remember Lot's wife?

01:55 → 01:58

Jesus said to His disciples,

01:58 → 02:01

in talking about the Kingdom of God:

02:01 → 02:04

"Remember Lot's wife"

02:04 → 02:08

who with her husband, moved

02:08 → 02:11

to the city of Sodom and Gomorrah.

02:11 → 02:14

They looked at that area and

02:14 → 02:18

it looked good to them. It was a great place

02:18 → 02:21

to live. There were lots of blessings.

02:21 → 02:24

So Lot and his wife, moved near

02:24 → 02:28

to that city. All of a sudden then

02:28 → 02:31

we hear that they were living IN the city.

02:31 → 02:34

And we're all familiar with the account

02:34 → 02:37

of when the angels came to visit Lot,

02:37 → 02:41

and how depraved and sick

02:41 → 02:44

the people of that time were.

02:44 → 02:47

Lot's wife was IN THAT HOUSE

02:47 → 02:51

when those people were beating down

02:51 → 02:54

the door to rape their visitors.

02:54 → 02:57

Lot's wife was IN THAT HOUSE

02:57 → 03:01

when Lot offered his daughters

03:01 → 03:04

to those people instead.

03:04 → 03:07

Lot's wife

03:07 → 03:10

was WITH Lot when God came to

03:10 → 03:14

rescue him from that depravity

03:14 → 03:17

from the world that was not uplifting him

03:17 → 03:20

and not supporting his faith

03:20 → 03:24

and Lot and his family ran from

03:24 → 03:27

Sodom and Gomorrah ...

03:27 → 03:30

"Remember Lot's wife".

03:30 → 03:34

She looked back.

03:34 → 03:37

I wonder what she thought ...

03:37 → 03:40

Oh my beautiful house,

03:40 → 03:43

all of those things

03:43 → 03:47

that I had there;

03:47 → 03:50

I had to leave them behind. All of my

03:50 → 03:53

wonderful friends. All of

03:53 → 03:57

the things of this world

03:57 → 04:00

that she had to see

04:00 → 04:03

one more time

04:03 → 04:07

but the fire and brimstone raining down from heaven

04:07 → 04:10

and annihilated

04:10 → 04:13

everything that her mind

04:13 → 04:16

was fixed on.

04:16 → 04:20

"Remember Lot's

04:20 → 04:23

wife".

04:23 → 04:26

Because how difficult it is

04:26 → 04:30

even for us today who live

04:30 → 04:33

in the Kingdom of God ...

04:33 → 04:36

who have received faith by the gift

04:36 → 04:40

of the Holy Spirit ... who know and understand what

04:40 → 04:43

God's will is ... how easy it is

04:43 → 04:46

for us ... to look back.

04:46 → 04:49

To want something else.

04:49 → 04:53

To look at the world and be envious

04:53 → 04:56

Scripture says that's even a problem for us.

04:56 → 04:59

But we live in the Kingdom of God.

04:59 → 05:03

And we are to live in God's righteousness

05:03 → 05:06

but we know how difficult that is

05:06 → 05:09

for us. Even how difficult it was

05:09 → 05:13

for the church in Rome that Paul was writing to.

05:13 → 05:16

That was an interesting congregation

05:16 → 05:19

because it had both converts

05:19 → 05:22

from Judaism in it as well as

05:22 → 05:26

new Christian Gentiles in it;

05:26 → 05:29

coming together ... trying to figure out how they were

05:29 → 05:32

going to live and work together

05:32 → 05:36

to promote God's Kingdom.

05:36 → 05:39

And it wasn't going so well

05:39 → 05:42

because they had difficulties

05:42 → 05:46

'cause they kept looking back.

05:46 → 05:49

The Jews kept looking back to what was so

05:49 → 05:52

familiar to them. Their dietary

05:52 → 05:56

laws, the Laws of Scripture,

05:56 → 05:59

circumcision. The Gentiles

05:59 → 06:02

kept looking back to everything that they had

06:02 → 06:05

in their life before coming to faith

06:05 → 06:09

and it was destroying their congregation ...

06:09 → 06:12

because everybody was passing judgment

06:12 → 06:15

on everyone else.

06:15 → 06:19

We had the Gentiles saying to the Jews: Stop

06:19 → 06:22

cramming the Law down us.

06:22 → 06:25

That doesn't apply anymore. Christ destroyed it. We

06:25 → 06:29

live in freedom. We can eat

06:29 → 06:32

whatever we want ... bacon cheeseburgers,

06:32 → 06:35

if we want, are fine now.

06:35 → 06:38

But the Jews kept saying:

06:38 → 06:42

Oh, it just irks me when those Gentiles

06:42 → 06:45

go over there and eat that meat that is on sale

06:45 → 06:48

because it was sacrificed to idols.

06:48 → 06:52

How can they even think

06:52 → 06:55

of putting that food

06:55 → 06:58

into their mouths knowing that it was that close

06:58 → 07:02

to an idol.

07:02 → 07:05

And they just kept tearing the congregation apart

07:05 → 07:08

by arguing and bickering and judging

07:08 → 07:11

each other. And the Apostle Paul

07:11 → 07:15

came to them and said: You know the Kingdom of God is not

07:15 → 07:18

about what you eat. It's not about

07:18 → 07:21

what you drink. The Kingdom of God is about the

07:21 → 07:25

righteousness of Christ. It is

07:25 → 07:28

what is INSIDE of you. It is not

07:28 → 07:31

living in such a way as to

07:31 → 07:35

make yourself look good. Or to make yourself

07:35 → 07:38

look better than the person next to you.

07:38 → 07:41

It is about Christ living IN you.

07:41 → 07:44

That faith that has been given to you

07:44 → 07:48

and that wonderful gift of God enables you

07:48 → 07:51

to live in a way that pleases God;

07:51 → 07:54

in the freedom from your sins.

07:54 → 07:58

The removal of those sins from you means that there is

07:58 → 08:01

no longer guilt in your life.

08:01 → 08:04

Because you can't have guilt for something

08:04 → 08:08

you don't have.

08:08 → 08:11

And you don't have that punishment of sin on you.

08:11 → 08:14

Christ took that punishment on Himself.

08:14 → 08:17

He took that punishment

08:17 → 08:21

to the cross of Calvary.

08:21 → 08:24

And He died so that

08:24 → 08:27

we could be forgiven.

08:27 → 08:31

He took our sins upon Himself

08:31 → 08:34

and in place He has

08:34 → 08:37

given us His righteousness ...

08:37 → 08:41

His holiness. And we're reminded

08:41 → 08:44

that we're to live in that righteousness,

08:44 → 08:47

not some manmade righteousness that we make up and

08:47 → 08:50

decide this is what makes us a good Christian.

08:50 → 08:54

And there are a lot of groups and people

08:54 → 08:57

that do that today. If you wanna be a good Christian

08:57 → 09:00

you can't have any alcohol ever.

09:00 → 09:04

If you wanna live your life of faith, you should have no

09:04 → 09:07

caffeine. You should never treat ... mistreat animals

09:07 → 09:10

therefore all of us should be vegans.

09:10 → 09:14

We all come to this place

09:14 → 09:17

with our own ideas.

09:17 → 09:20

And there's nothing wrong with some of those ideas.

09:20 → 09:23

If you cannot use alcohol wisely,

09:23 → 09:27

then you shouldn't be drinking it.

09:27 → 09:30

And, for you, that is something that is going to be

09:30 → 09:33

outside of what you can do.

09:33 → 09:37

But you can't make that law and say:

09:37 → 09:40

This is what ALL Christians do.

09:40 → 09:43

Or more importantly ... to stand in judgment

09:43 → 09:47

on someone else and say: I am better

09:47 → 09:50

because you do that. The Apostle Paul says

09:50 → 09:53

it's not about what you drink.

09:53 → 09:56

It's not about what you eat, so STOP

09:56 → 10:00

judging each other.

10:00 → 10:03

Stop coming down so hard on each other and maybe

10:03 → 10:06

look at yourself.

10:06 → 10:10

Because it may be perfectly fine

10:10 → 10:13

for you to eat meat bought at a store

10:13 → 10:16

that is run by a bunch of Mormons.

10:16 → 10:20

How dare you support the Mormon Church with your money?

10:20 → 10:23

Well, let's not go to Vons anymore. You know let's never

10:23 → 10:26

drink a Coke because they're owned by the Mormons, too.

10:26 → 10:29

We may as well just run over there and give them an

10:29 → 10:33

offering and there are people who think that way. That's not

10:33 → 10:36

what the Kingdom of God is about.

10:36 → 10:39

It's about believing in Jesus Christ

10:39 → 10:43

and living that life of love

10:43 → 10:46

so that the people who are

10:46 → 10:49

your believers are encouraged

10:49 → 10:53

and not torn down.

10:53 → 10:56

And you can have your opinion.

10:56 → 10:59

It's not law; it is an opinion.

10:59 → 11:03

But if your opinion

11:03 → 11:06

is putting someone else who worships

11:06 → 11:09

with you into a place of despair,

11:09 → 11:12

into a place of feeling that they're somehow not as good a

11:12 → 11:16

Christian, or that they are second-rate in comparison

11:16 → 11:19

to you, you have NOT

11:19 → 11:22

treated your brother or sister in the faith

11:22 → 11:26

with love.

11:26 → 11:29

You put a stumbling block in the way to their

11:29 → 11:32

relationship with Christ.

11:32 → 11:36

So sometimes it means even though we know we

11:36 → 11:39

CAN ...

11:39 → 11:42

we may not do it.

11:42 → 11:45

Because Paul says it's all about

11:45 → 11:49

loving each other ... supporting each other.

11:49 → 11:52

It doesn't mean that you're going to let anyone else

11:52 → 11:55

speak badly of what you

11:55 → 11:59

consider good.

11:59 → 12:02

But you're going to educate that person.

12:02 → 12:05

And sometimes it's going to take years of education,

12:05 → 12:09

as well as years of example,

12:09 → 12:12

to say that this is okay.

12:12 → 12:15

For someone

12:15 → 12:18

who can't drink any alcohol at all,

12:18 → 12:22

and it really is a serious issue for them.

12:22 → 12:25

You don't bring them into your home and pour them a glass of

12:25 → 12:28

wine and yourself a glass of wine and toast them

12:28 → 12:32

even though you could.

12:32 → 12:35

But there may be a time when you can sit down with them and

12:35 → 12:38

say: I understand that this is a difficulty for you.

12:38 → 12:42

But God in His Scripture even says:

12:42 → 12:45

A little wine is good for the stomach.

12:45 → 12:48

But we do that in love,

12:48 → 12:51

not in condemnation.

12:51 → 12:55

Living in the Kingdom of God

12:55 → 12:58

means that we live at peace with God.

12:58 → 13:01

And that really is, I think, the first place for us

13:01 → 13:05

to start. We, as individuals,

13:05 → 13:08

need to be at peace with God

13:08 → 13:11

in our relationship with Him.

13:11 → 13:15

To honestly know and understand

13:15 → 13:18

that He loves us. That He

13:18 → 13:21

has freed us from our sins. That He

13:21 → 13:24

says to us: This world is

13:24 → 13:28

yours to use in connection with your faith

13:28 → 13:31

if you use it wisely.

13:31 → 13:34

And that's fine

13:34 → 13:38

and we make those decisions for our life

13:38 → 13:41

based on the Law of God

13:41 → 13:44

and the common sense that He has given to us.

13:44 → 13:48

And we live at peace with that.

13:48 → 13:51

And we realize that the person who sits in the pew behind us

13:51 → 13:54

or in front of us, in

13:54 → 13:57

adiaphora can come to different conclusions

13:57 → 14:01

that are the total opposite of ours.

14:01 → 14:04

But, in peace, we can come

14:04 → 14:07

and worship together.

14:07 → 14:11

To love each other. To understand

14:11 → 14:14

each other. Because it is about

14:14 → 14:17

the Kingdom of God and His

14:17 → 14:21

righteousness. Not looking back

14:21 → 14:24

to what we missed from the days when we were outside

14:24 → 14:27

of the faith. Not looking back

14:27 → 14:30

to holding on to the things of this world. Because Jesus

14:30 → 14:34

told His disciples that's what

14:34 → 14:37

everybody was doing.

14:37 → 14:40

When Lot and his wife left the house,

14:40 → 14:44

that's what everybody was doing.

14:44 → 14:47

When Noah was building the ark, everybody was

14:47 → 14:50

going along their merry little life, having a

14:50 → 14:54

wonderful time; they were eating, they were drinking,

14:54 → 14:57

they were sleeping, they were going to work. They were

14:57 → 15:00

doing the things of daily life.

15:00 → 15:03

Nobody heard ... the door

15:03 → 15:07

on the ark close.

15:07 → 15:10

Nobody saw ...

15:10 → 15:13

Lot and his wife running to the hills

15:13 → 15:17

and the fire and brimstone coming down.

15:17 → 15:20

And the Kingdom of God is going to come

15:20 → 15:23

in the same way to us.

15:23 → 15:27

You're gonna be outside of your house;

15:27 → 15:30

you're not gonna have time to run in and grab whatever you

15:30 → 15:33

think you have to have with you to go to heaven.

15:33 → 15:36

If you're at work,

15:36 → 15:40

you're not gonna get home.

15:40 → 15:43

You may be lying in bed with your wife,

15:43 → 15:46

or your husband and it's still going to happen.

15:46 → 15:50

And the faithful

15:50 → 15:53

are going to be taken to be with the Lord.

15:53 → 15:56

And those who do not believe

15:56 → 16:00

will be eternally condemned.

16:00 → 16:03

[Pause]

16:03 → 16:06

And that could happen today.

16:06 → 16:09

So we look at our lives

16:09 → 16:13

and we understand they're temporary.

16:13 → 16:16

We understand ... that we're

16:16 → 16:19

here to help each other and support each other

16:19 → 16:23

through the difficulties of living

16:23 → 16:26

in this world.

16:26 → 16:29

So we stop judging each other. We stop

16:29 → 16:33

nitpicking and ripping each other apart.

16:33 → 16:36

But we come back to what James said:

16:36 → 16:39

Submit to the will of God.

16:39 → 16:43

Be at peace with God.

16:43 → 16:46

Live at peace, and live in the joy

16:46 → 16:49

of the Holy Spirit. Not looking to the world

16:49 → 16:52

for its answers and its pleasures, but turning

16:52 → 16:56

to our King. Turning to our God and saying:

16:56 → 16:59

I live for You because

16:59 → 17:02

You lived and died for me.

17:02 → 17:06

"Remember Lot's wife".

17:06 → 17:09

Every time you pick up that salt shaker ...

17:09 → 17:12

that really was her end.

17:12 → 17:16

We have so much more

17:16 → 17:19

in store. We have

17:19 → 17:22

the Kingdom of God for all eternity

17:22 → 17:25

with Christ in His heaven.

17:25 → 17:29

Live in the Kingdom of God

17:29 → 17:32

and serve Him.

17:32 → 17:35

Amen.

17:35 → 17:39

Let us rise.

17:39 → 17:42

Now may the peace of God which goes beyond

17:42 → 17:45

all of our understanding, keep your hearts

and your minds and especially your lives,

17:48 → 17:52

in the one true faith unto life everlasting. Amen.
