Transcript for Forms: Dynamic Select Menu

Time Content
00:05 → 00:08

RH: On some sites you have forms with a series of

00:08 → 00:11

combos or drop-down menus where what you select in one will

00:11 → 00:14

determine what's presented in another one.

00:14 → 00:17

Very often in the past these were almost inaccessible,

00:17 → 00:20

they were really difficult to use. Has that been your experience in the past?

00:20 → 00:23

AD: Some have been, but when they are done well

00:23 → 00:26

in fact they are a huge benefit

00:26 → 00:28

as we can show with this one.

00:28 → 00:32

So, if it works well it is a huge boost

00:32 → 00:35

to accessibility rather than being a hindrance.

00:35 → 00:37

RH: Can you show us how this one works? AD: Yes.

00:37 → 00:41

[READER: "Heading 1, dynamically populate a select.

00:41 → 00:44

Begin form. Region. Choose one, combo box

00:44 → 00:47

region. Country, choose one. End form."]

00:47 → 00:50

AD: Right, now we'll go and choose one ...

00:50 → 00:54

[READER: "Country, choose one. Combo box region. Browse off.

00:54 → 00:58

Region, choose one. Combo box, Europe"]

00:58 → 01:01

AD: So I've selected Europe and when I tab ...

01:01 → 01:04

[READER: "Country choose one"] AD: I then choose a country ...

01:04 → 01:07

[READER: "Combo box, France, Germany, Spain"]

01:07 → 01:10

AD: So I am only choosing countries that are within Europe.

01:10 → 01:13

If I shift-tab back to the first combo box ...

01:13 → 01:16

[READER: "Region, Europe. Choose one.

01:16 → 01:20

North America. Country, choose one. Canada, USA"]

01:20 → 01:22

AD: And if I ... (Go back to 'Region')

01:22 → 01:25

[READER: "Region, Asia-Pacific"] AD: And then go back ...

01:25 → 01:29

[READER: "Country. Australia, Japan, New Zealand"]

01:29 → 01:31

AD: So that's giving me the options

01:31 → 01:35

relating only to the one I have selected above

01:35 → 01:37

and that's very nice.

01:37 → 01:39

RH: And that works with both Jaws and -

01:39 → 01:42

AD: Yes, oh yes. Well it works with a screen

01:42 → 01:45

reader or without a screen reader, but

01:45 → 01:48

it is a particularly nice feature for

01:48 → 01:51

screen reader users because one of the things

01:51 → 01:55

that is very useful is to cut down on is a whole lot of verbosity

01:55 → 01:58

and being able to do it like this just saves

01:58 → 02:01

a lot of tooling around to get to what you want. FADE OUT
