Transcript for A Youth Makes Up for Lost Time

Time Content
00:00 → 00:02

Every person wants to get ahead.

00:02 → 00:04

But some find bumps more than others.

00:05 → 00:08

For Apollos Ross gang violence meant dropping out of his senior year

00:08 → 00:13

Now at 18 he's making up for lost time. With the help of New Door Ventures

00:13 → 00:16

A program that helps at risk youth get ready for work in life.

00:16 → 00:20

He was recently placed in three month internship at Mission Pie.

00:20 → 00:22

Today, he's goals are clear

00:22 → 00:25

One of the most important goals is getting my GDE definitely

00:25 → 00:29

Another goal is finding a job that I can keep for a while

00:29 → 00:34

I just got to a point where if he felt like he was going to have that many problems

00:35 → 00:40

like gang problems, people getting expelled or suspended. Police coming to schools

00:40 → 00:43

Then just wait until you turn 18 then you can go somewhere to get your GDE

00:43 → 00:48

or your high school diploma. That'll be a lot safer without risk **

00:48 → 00:51

There is another program that can help him get away from all that stuff

00:51 → 00:53

and find something positive.

00:53 → 00:56

This onsite training program has been a learning process for Apollos

00:58 → 01:01

I'm more confident when I go to work

01:01 → 01:06

First when I started, I was probably a 3 and now I'd say I'm a 7

01:06 → 01:11

I also have to work on keeping the same peace, working hard at everything

01:11 → 01:18

Getting things right. Then if I do that I'll probably be a 9 maybe a 10 one day.

01:22 → 01:24

We definitely have seen Apollo grow

01:24 → 01:29

in terms of his own awareness of what's challenging about the job

01:29 → 01:33

in terms of learning how to get through whatever moments

01:33 → 01:36

might be hard, scary, things that are challenging,

01:36 → 01:38

things that are tedious

01:38 → 01:39

He's doing a good job

01:39 → 01:43

And he's staying very present and very honest

01:43 → 01:45

in his interactions with us

01:45 → 01:48

Today, Apollos is taking a practice test at new doors

01:48 → 01:51

to asses what academic areas he will need a tutor in

01:51 → 01:53

--another service rovided by new door

01:53 → 01:55

Another process in getting my GDE

01:55 → 01:57

I have to take a couple practice tests first

01:57 → 01:59

Then I'll try to take the full test

01:59 → 02:02

Math is not my thing at all,

02:02 → 02:05

Everything else I'm pretty good at

02:05 → 02:08

His weakness in math has proven to be a challenge at work.

02:08 → 02:11

I think just watching people do the cash register

02:11 → 02:15

it looks so easy and when I go to the cash register

02:15 → 02:19

I have to use a calculator and add them all up

02:20 → 02:22

Karen Highsler hopes that Apollo walks away from this experience

02:22 → 02:25

with a sense of confidence to prepare him for the difficult job market ahead.

02:27 → 02:30

It's not an easy time for young people to find work

02:30 → 02:36

The stronger the sense of his competency is the better that process will be.

02:36 → 02:39

Then there's so many things that interns learn here

02:39 → 02:41

that are really transferable

02:41 → 02:43

You know, how to relate to customers

02:43 → 02:45

how to talk to adults

02:45 → 02:48

This program helps you with a GDE

02:48 → 02:51

I think you'll keep more kids from getting into trouble

02:51 → 02:55

so they can have a place to go to and take GDE's and get a job

02:55 → 02:58

For Apollos, learning is not only about job skills

02:58 → 03:00

the responsabilities that transfer to his home life

03:00 → 03:02

He's a lot more aware of different things that

03:02 → 03:06

he kinda used to have a tendency to let pass

03:06 → 03:09

Like cleaning his room, doing chores

03:09 → 03:10

the basic things.

03:10 → 03:13

And he's learned how to be more responsible too

03:13 → 03:18

I'm glad my mom gave me the papers and said sign them

03:18 → 03:22

I was like 'no, I don't know what it is' and then I signed them

03:34 → 03:35

How is it?

03:35 → 03:37

it needs more hot sauce.
