Transcript for Adding Subtitles to Videos for Web Viewing

This is a quick LTA that is concerned with adding subtitles or additional language translations to videos.

DotSUB great new resource. It's a free web hosting site for videos that permits transcriptions.

This is a useful tool for hearing impaired and for adding additonal language translations. URL at bottom.

Numerous free web hosting sites, but dotSUB currently only one where possible to add subtitles.

Site appears to be recently created with parts of the site still under construction.

Process involved in adding subtitles described in this video. First step in process is to create a video.

URL on screen for another video that generally describes the process of creating video.

This video is a narrated set of PowerPoint slides. The site may be used for adding translation to other videos.

Second step in process is to create a dotSUB account. Go to URL on previous slide for creating login and password.

Next step after creating video and creating a dotSUB account is to upload video to the site. See graphic.

The dotSUB site has generous limit of 300 MB for videos that are uploaded to their site.

After clicking on link to post the video a new screen will appear where metadata should be provided.

Information needs to be added here about video such as title, license of choice, language and description.

The option of who may view the video also included. Options include public, registered users, and private.

Additional questions regarding who may transcribe and translate the videos uploaded.

After questions are answered the video is posted. Time required is dependent on file size and internet connection.

Once video posted the URL for site available along with two size options for embedding video in web page.

Having two sizes for the video viewing window is a very convenient feature.

Adding subtitles comes next. Access URL for video just created. See advanced tools on right for transcribiing.

Several other links are found with the second one to select after the transcription process completed.

Adding subtitles not difficult. Enter a starting and stopping time in minutes and seconds for the subtitle.

Once all of the subtitles have been created, click on the "Done" link to indicate process is completed.

In short time the newly created transcription available for viewing. Check to see if the created subtitles are appropriate.

If there is a need to change any subtitles, a "tweaking" option available. Save after corrections made.

URLs for created video not particularly user friendly, but if embedded in web page this minor problem.

At this stage possible to add foreign translations if there is an interest in doing so.

Transcribing video clips now possible with dotSUB. Steps include creating a video, saving on dotSUB site...

...followed by completing the transcription. Now you know about a potentially very useful too.
