Sermon text, JEREMIAH 1:4-10,

00:03 → 00:06

taken from the HOLY BIBLE: NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION

00:06 → 00:09

Let us rise for this morning's sermon text recorded for us

00:09 → 00:13

by the prophet Jeremiah,

00:13 → 00:16

where we read from Chapter 1, beginning with Verse 4:

00:16 → 00:19

THE WORD OF THE LORD CAME TO ME, SAYING,

00:19 → 00:23

"BEFORE I FORMED YOU IN THE WOMB I KNEW YOU,

00:23 → 00:26

BEFORE YOU WERE BORN I SET YOU APART;

00:26 → 00:29

I APPOINTED YOU AS A PROPHET TO THE NATIONS."

00:29 → 00:33

"AH, SOVEREIGN LORD," I SAID,

00:33 → 00:36

"I DO NOT KNOW HOW TO SPEAK; I AM ONLY A CHILD."

00:36 → 00:39

BUT THE LORD SAID TO ME, "DO NOT SAY, 'I AM ONLY A CHILD.'

00:39 → 00:42

YOU MUST GO TO EVERYONE I SEND YOU TO

00:42 → 00:46

AND SAY WHATEVER I COMMAND YOU.

00:46 → 00:49

DO NOT BE AFRAID OF THEM, FOR I AM WITH YOU

00:49 → 00:52

AND WILL RESCUE YOU," DECLARES THE LORD.

00:52 → 00:56

THEN THE LORD REACHED OUT HIS HAND AND TOUCHED MY MOUTH

00:56 → 00:59

AND SAID TO ME, "NOW I HAVE PUT MY WORDS

00:59 → 01:02

IN YOUR MOUTH. SEE, TODAY I APPOINT YOU

01:02 → 01:06

OVER NATIONS AND KINGDOMS TO UPROOT

01:06 → 01:09

AND TEAR DOWN, TO DESTROY AND OVERTHROW,

01:09 → 01:12

TO BUILD AND TO PLANT."

01:12 → 01:15

This is the Word of our Lord. Let us pray:

01:15 → 01:19

Glorious and gracious God,

01:19 → 01:22

may the words of my mouth and the meditation of each of

01:22 → 01:25

our hearts be acceptable in Your sight

01:25 → 01:29

our only source of hope and comfort.

01:29 → 01:32

Amen.

01:32 → 01:35

Pastor Dave motions for the congregation

01:35 → 01:39

to be seated.

01:39 → 01:42

Dear Followers of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ:

01:42 → 01:45

The time

01:45 → 01:48

in which Jeremiah lived,

01:48 → 01:52

was certainly a time of turmoil

01:52 → 01:55

for God's people. For God's children

01:55 → 01:58

at that time, were suffering tremendously.

01:58 → 02:02

We realize that throughout

02:02 → 02:05

the Old Testament, God had called a people

02:05 → 02:08

to be His own. Brought them

02:08 → 02:12

up out of Egypt and placed them in a land

02:12 → 02:15

that was filled with

02:15 → 02:18

tremendous blessings, so that He could show them

02:18 → 02:21

and lead them and also through them

02:21 → 02:25

send His Messiah.

02:25 → 02:28

God's people, when they got into that land

02:28 → 02:31

filled with all of the blessings

02:31 → 02:35

began to forget about God.

02:35 → 02:38

When they came into that land,

02:38 → 02:41

they didn't drive out all of those people

02:41 → 02:45

who had vile worship practices.

02:45 → 02:48

The heathen nations that were there... they let some of

02:48 → 02:51

those remain. They even

02:51 → 02:54

married with some of those. And year after year,

02:54 → 02:58

their worship of the true God deteriorated.

02:58 → 03:01

It became mixed with that of idols.

03:01 → 03:04

We have the tribe in

03:04 → 03:08

the northern part of Israel setting up a new worship

03:08 → 03:11

center. Building golden calves to represent

03:11 → 03:14

God and having the people come there

03:14 → 03:18

to worship them.

03:18 → 03:21

God came to them yet repeatedly with His prophets

03:21 → 03:24

with His Word,

03:24 → 03:27

to forsake the idols and

03:27 → 03:31

to return to Him.

03:31 → 03:34

The northern tribes didn't heed that warning.

03:34 → 03:37

And God brought in the Assyrians

03:37 → 03:41

and hauled them off ...

03:41 → 03:44

never to be heard from again.

03:44 → 03:47

Dispersed them away.

03:47 → 03:51

Because they had turned from their true God

03:51 → 03:54

and their worship of Him. And now we have

03:54 → 03:57

a small group of God's people living in and around

03:57 → 04:00

Jerusalem, who are falling

04:00 → 04:04

into the same patterns

04:04 → 04:07

of neglecting God. Putting their trust in the worldly

04:07 → 04:10

kings and the worldly treasures for

04:10 → 04:14

protection and for help.

04:14 → 04:17

And Jeremiah, one day,

04:17 → 04:20

receives the call from God.

04:20 → 04:24

God comes to Jeremiah at this time

04:24 → 04:27

of tremendous turmoil with

04:27 → 04:30

the southern kingdom...all that was left

04:30 → 04:33

of God's people. And God comes to the

04:33 → 04:37

prophet Jeremiah and He says: Before you

04:37 → 04:40

were created, I knew you.

04:40 → 04:43

Before you were knit together in your

04:43 → 04:47

mother's womb, I had set you apart.

04:47 → 04:50

You are going to be the one to go

04:50 → 04:53

to My people. To share with them

04:53 → 04:57

the message that I have to send to you.

04:57 → 05:00

Jeremiah should have taken great

05:00 → 05:03

comfort in that fact. Should have been

05:03 → 05:06

reassured that God was on his side and that God

05:06 → 05:10

was with him. God who had created him. Set him apart

05:10 → 05:13

for this very purpose had now

05:13 → 05:16

called him to action ...

05:16 → 05:20

to be the one to go to God's people.

05:20 → 05:23

But maybe Jeremiah himself realized

05:23 → 05:26

the people that he was to go to

05:26 → 05:30

were not going to be receptive

05:30 → 05:33

to all of God's will.

05:33 → 05:36

They were just getting further and further away from God.

05:36 → 05:40

Maybe he realized that his age was

05:40 → 05:43

going to be a problem because that's what he brings up.

05:43 → 05:46

He brings it up to God and he says:

05:46 → 05:49

You know I'm only a child. I don't know how

05:49 → 05:53

to speak well. And God

05:53 → 05:56

said to him: Don't say, I am

05:56 → 05:59

only a child.

05:59 → 06:03

Realize, I

06:03 → 06:06

have selected you.

06:06 → 06:09

I will put My words into your mouth.

06:09 → 06:13

I will be with you and I will

06:13 → 06:16

rescue you.

06:16 → 06:19

And maybe that should have been a warning for Jeremiah.

06:19 → 06:22

That in his ministry he was going to need to be rescued.

06:22 → 06:26

To date Jeremiah's ministry was not a pleasant one.

06:26 → 06:29

His fellow brothers

06:29 → 06:32

in the faith wanted him put to

06:32 → 06:36

death for the messages that he proclaimed.

06:36 → 06:39

He had a horrible time

06:39 → 06:42

when he watched God's children

06:42 → 06:46

being dragged off into the Babylonian captivity.

06:46 → 06:49

And he lamented in anguish.

06:49 → 06:52

The destruction of Jerusalem.

06:52 → 06:55

The Holy City of God,

06:55 → 06:59

destroyed to rubble.

06:59 → 07:02

Maybe Jeremiah knew that his work

07:02 → 07:05

was going to be difficult and hard and he said:

07:05 → 07:09

I don't know how to speak. But God said to him:

07:09 → 07:12

DON'T BE AFRAID!

07:12 → 07:15

Don't be afraid because YOU ARE going to go.

07:15 → 07:19

You're going to go to the places and the people

07:19 → 07:22

that I send you to. And you are going to

07:22 → 07:25

tell them the words that I have placed in your mouth.

07:25 → 07:28

You need to realize this. That

07:28 → 07:32

is why I created you.

07:32 → 07:35

That is why I formed you to be the one

07:35 → 07:38

to accomplish this work for me.

07:38 → 07:42

And God reaches out and touches the mouth of Jeremiah

07:42 → 07:45

and said: See, I put My words

07:45 → 07:48

in your mouth. Now you are

07:48 → 07:52

to go and share that message.

07:52 → 07:55

And Jeremiah did.

07:55 → 07:58

Jeremiah did what the LORD had asked

07:58 → 08:01

of him. He had gone to God's people. He went

08:01 → 08:05

to them repeatedly, with the threat

08:05 → 08:08

of punishment for their unbelief. With the reminder

08:08 → 08:11

of the Gospel that Messiah was still going to come.

08:11 → 08:15

He did his building.

08:15 → 08:18

He did his planting. He also

08:18 → 08:21

did his uprooting and that was what was of most importance.

08:21 → 08:25

Not,

08:25 → 08:28

where he went, but

08:28 → 08:31

actually what he said.

08:31 → 08:34

And the same message is true for us today.

08:34 → 08:38

We are fully aware that God

08:38 → 08:41

has created us to be unique individuals.

08:41 → 08:44

We've been reading about that in First Corinthians

08:44 → 08:48

in our Epistle Lessons.

08:48 → 08:51

How we are all wonderfully special and unique

08:51 → 08:54

with different gifts created by God,

08:54 → 08:58

for different kinds of service.

08:58 → 09:01

Today we are reminded once again that not everyone is

09:01 → 09:04

going to be a prophet, not everyone is going to be a

09:04 → 09:07

teacher, not everyone is going to have the gift of

09:07 → 09:11

administration. We all have different gifts,

09:11 → 09:14

but yet we come together

09:14 → 09:17

understanding the love of God.

09:17 → 09:21

Because God IS love. And He has shown that love to us

09:21 → 09:24

in His Son, Jesus Christ.

09:24 → 09:27

And that is what brings us together.

09:27 → 09:31

That is what bonds us together as the family

09:31 → 09:34

of God here at Zion to go and

09:34 → 09:37

to do. To go and to speak and

09:37 → 09:40

to not be afraid. Not be afraid

09:40 → 09:44

because God has created us to be exactly

09:44 → 09:47

who we are with the gifts

09:47 → 09:50

needed to carry out His work.

09:50 → 09:54

And what a wonderful reminder that is and even though

09:54 → 09:57

we are sinful human beings, He sent His Son

09:57 → 10:00

to save us.

10:00 → 10:04

To show us that love, that we are not perfect.

10:04 → 10:07

We will NOT be perfect in this world,

10:07 → 10:10

but He has come to cover our sin.

10:10 → 10:13

He sent His Son

10:13 → 10:17

to suffer tremendously;

10:17 → 10:20

to die on the cross of Calvary

10:20 → 10:23

in punishment and payment

10:23 → 10:27

for MY sins

10:27 → 10:30

because of HIS love for me.

10:30 → 10:33

And He has called me to be His own.

10:33 → 10:37

He has made me holy, setting me apart from the world

10:37 → 10:40

and He has done the same thing for you.

10:40 → 10:43

Called you to be His son. Called you to be

10:43 → 10:46

His daughter. Called you out of the world

10:46 → 10:50

to be set apart, for Him

10:50 → 10:53

and for His purposes.

10:53 → 10:56

And He has said: Now go out in your life.

10:56 → 11:00

Yes. I have received a call

11:00 → 11:03

from you as a congregation

11:03 → 11:06

to come here and to lead you in worship.

11:06 → 11:10

To carry out the ministry of the Gospel,

11:10 → 11:13

to teach and support you in YOUR ministry of the Gospel.

11:13 → 11:16

That's a wonderful gift.

11:16 → 11:20

That is a wonderful thing that

11:20 → 11:23

we practice Biblically in our synod ...

11:23 → 11:26

the Divine Call.

11:26 → 11:29

That you didn't hire me.

11:29 → 11:33

That you didn't put out an ad saying:

11:33 → 11:36

This is what we need in a pastor. And if you don't meet

11:36 → 11:39

all of that criteria, don't even bother responding.

11:39 → 11:43

You gathered together as the people of God and

11:43 → 11:46

prayed. And the Holy Spirit

11:46 → 11:49

led you to a decision.

11:49 → 11:53

And you extended to me a call.

11:53 → 11:56

And the Holy Spirit

11:56 → 11:59

worked in my heart and in my life to come to you and to

11:59 → 12:02

proclaim the Gospel.

12:02 → 12:06

To come here with all of my

12:06 → 12:09

imperfections; with all of the things that I CAN do,

12:09 → 12:12

and all of the things that I can't do.

12:12 → 12:16

To know that at this time God has said we are

12:16 → 12:19

here working together with all of the things that

12:19 → 12:22

YOU can do and all of the things

12:22 → 12:26

that you can't do. And all too often

12:26 → 12:29

we get in the mindset of Jeremiah

12:29 → 12:32

saying: I'm too young.

12:32 → 12:35

I can't talk. Maybe we're like

12:35 → 12:39

Moses. Moses said: I have a stammering tongue.

12:39 → 12:42

But the prophets of the Old Testament when faced with that

12:42 → 12:45

great task ahead of them

12:45 → 12:49

focused on their own insecurities ... their

12:49 → 12:52

own shortcomings, instead of focusing on who it was

12:52 → 12:55

that would make them unafraid.

12:55 → 12:59

That it was the LORD who had called them.

12:59 → 13:02

The LORD who would be with them. The LORD who would

13:02 → 13:05

rescue them. And the same thing is true of us.

13:05 → 13:08

When we put up barriers to going and

13:08 → 13:12

doing God's Word, it's because usually our

13:12 → 13:15

own insecurities are our own things

13:15 → 13:18

that we think we can't do well and

13:18 → 13:22

we don't want to stress ourselves.

13:22 → 13:25

Instead of focusing on what God is going to do when He is

13:25 → 13:28

with us and His strength

13:28 → 13:32

and His power. So often we DO sit back and say: I don't know

13:32 → 13:35

what to say. I wouldn't know

13:35 → 13:38

what to do. God will TELL you

13:38 → 13:41

what to do. God will put the words

13:41 → 13:45

into your mouth. You trust in Him

13:45 → 13:48

and His Holy Spirit from the message that

13:48 → 13:51

He has taught you day after day

13:51 → 13:55

and year after year as you have lived

13:55 → 13:58

as one of His children.

13:58 → 14:01

In the Word ... studying what God has said.

14:01 → 14:05

Using all of those passages

14:05 → 14:08

that have brought you comfort to comfort others.

14:08 → 14:11

Using those passages that have reminded

14:11 → 14:14

you of your own sinfulness.

14:14 → 14:18

To go to those who are trapped in sin,

14:18 → 14:21

who are struggling with sin. Reminding yourself of the

14:21 → 14:24

passages wherein you find comfort in the forgiveness of

14:24 → 14:28

God and going to those who need that

14:28 → 14:31

same comfort of forgiveness.

14:31 → 14:34

To do the work of God and to do it unafraid.

14:34 → 14:38

That IS the high calling that we have.

14:38 → 14:41

That is the WONDERFUL GIFT

14:41 → 14:44

that God has given to us as His church.

14:44 → 14:47

Which He reminds us in the Psalm for this morning.

14:47 → 14:51

We take that so seriously;

14:51 → 14:54

we share that with our children. With the next

14:54 → 14:57

generation. We have such GREAT JOY

14:57 → 15:01

in the knowledge of our salvation.

15:01 → 15:04

We cannot help but share that with those who are living in

15:04 → 15:07

pain and suffering outside of the Gospel message.

15:07 → 15:11

It is Satan who

15:11 → 15:14

wants us to be afraid.

15:14 → 15:17

It is Satan who wants us to remain in one spot

15:17 → 15:20

doing nothing.

15:20 → 15:24

It is Satan who wants us to be silent and

15:24 → 15:27

we need to realize

15:27 → 15:30

that our God has been victorious over him.

15:30 → 15:34

Through His resurrection on

15:34 → 15:37

Easter Sunday morning, He silenced

15:37 → 15:40

Satan and all of the critiques he could have against God.

15:40 → 15:44

Jesus Himself has ascended to the right

15:44 → 15:47

hand of God, sitting there on God's throne

15:47 → 15:50

ruling over all authorities that have been placed

15:50 → 15:53

under His feet. That IS

15:53 → 15:57

OUR GOD!

15:57 → 16:00

He IS MY LORD and MY Savior and ...

16:00 → 16:03

What do I have to fear?

16:03 → 16:07

I have no fear in Jesus Christ

16:07 → 16:10

because His perfect love, drives out

16:10 → 16:13

all my fears.

16:13 → 16:17

And I trust in that. I rely on that.

16:17 → 16:20

So I look at the world around me and say: God you have

16:20 → 16:23

placed me here to go to them.

16:23 → 16:26

You have created me and placed me at this

16:26 → 16:30

exact time FOR YOUR PURPOSE.

16:30 → 16:33

Use me for that, LORD.

16:33 → 16:36

He will give each of us the words

16:36 → 16:40

that we are to tell; the words that we are to say,

16:40 → 16:43

whether they be words of Law, or words

16:43 → 16:46

of Gospel; words that tear down or words

16:46 → 16:50

that build up. It is the whole counsel of God

16:50 → 16:53

that He has given to us.

16:53 → 16:56

So I encourage you today:

16:56 → 17:00

Do not be afraid,

17:00 → 17:03

but go, and do what God has

17:03 → 17:06

in store for you.

17:06 → 17:09

Amen.

17:09 → 17:13

Let us rise.

17:13 → 17:16

Now may the peace of God which goes beyond all of our

17:16 → 17:19

understanding, keep your hearts and your minds and

17:19 → 17:23

especially your lives in the one true faith unto life

17:23 → 17:26

everlasting. Amen.
