Message based on Hebrews, Chapter 10, Verses 5-10. |
| 00:03 → 00:06 |
Text from the HOLY BIBLE: NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION |
| 00:06 → 00:09 |
Let us rise for this morning's sermon text recorded for us |
| 00:09 → 00:13 |
in the Letter to the Hebrews where we read from Chapter 10, |
| 00:13 → 00:16 |
beginning with Verse 5 ... |
| 00:16 → 00:19 |
THEREFORE, WHEN CHRIST CAME INTO THE WORLD, HE SAID: |
| 00:19 → 00:23 |
"SACRIFICE AND OFFERING YOU DID NOT DESIRE, |
| 00:23 → 00:26 |
BUT A BODY YOU PREPARED FOR ME; |
| 00:26 → 00:29 |
WITH BURNT OFFERINGS AND SIN OFFERINGS |
| 00:29 → 00:33 |
YOU WERE NOT PLEASED. THEN I SAID, 'HERE I AM - |
| 00:33 → 00:36 |
IT IS WRITTEN ABOUT ME IN THE SCROLL - I HAVE COME TO |
| 00:36 → 00:39 |
DO YOUR WILL, O GOD.'" |
| 00:39 → 00:42 |
FIRST HE SAID, "SACRIFICES AND OFFERINGS, |
| 00:42 → 00:46 |
BURNT OFFERINGS AND SIN OFFERINGS YOU DID NOT DESIRE, |
| 00:46 → 00:49 |
NOR WERE YOU PLEASED WITH THEM" (ALTHOUGH THE LAW |
| 00:49 → 00:52 |
REQUIRED THEM TO BE MADE). |
| 00:52 → 00:56 |
THEN HE SAID, "HERE I AM, I HAVE COME TO |
| 00:56 → 00:59 |
DO YOUR WILL." HE SETS ASIDE THE FIRST |
| 00:59 → 01:02 |
TO ESTABLISH THE SECOND. |
| 01:02 → 01:06 |
AND BY THAT WILL, WE HAVE BEEN MADE HOLY THROUGH |
| 01:06 → 01:09 |
THE SACRIFICE OF THE BODY OF JESUS CHRIST ONCE FOR ALL. |
| 01:09 → 01:12 |
This is the Word of our Lord; |
| 01:12 → 01:15 |
let us pray: |
| 01:15 → 01:19 |
Glorious and gracious God, may the words of my mouth |
| 01:19 → 01:22 |
and the meditation of each of our hearts |
| 01:22 → 01:25 |
be acceptable in Your sight, our only Source of Hope and |
| 01:25 → 01:29 |
Comfort. |
| 01:29 → 01:32 |
Amen. |
| 01:32 → 01:35 |
Pastor Dave |
| 01:35 → 01:39 |
motions for the congregation |
| 01:39 → 01:42 |
to be seated. |
| 01:42 → 01:45 |
Dear Followers |
| 01:45 → 01:48 |
of our Lord and Savior, |
| 01:48 → 01:52 |
Jesus Christ. |
| 01:52 → 01:55 |
Religion truly covers |
| 01:55 → 01:58 |
all aspects of a believer's life. |
| 01:58 → 02:02 |
Or at least that would be the goal of faith. |
| 02:02 → 02:05 |
The desire of the Lord |
| 02:05 → 02:08 |
who is the One who wants to have |
| 02:08 → 02:12 |
first and foremost prominence |
| 02:12 → 02:15 |
in the believer's heart |
| 02:15 → 02:18 |
and in his life. If we look at the Old Testament |
| 02:18 → 02:21 |
for a moment, we see how the Old Testament believer ... |
| 02:21 → 02:25 |
His entire life was governed |
| 02:25 → 02:28 |
and guided by his religion. |
| 02:28 → 02:31 |
By the faith that he professed. |
| 02:31 → 02:35 |
Even everything that he ate, |
| 02:35 → 02:38 |
had been directed by God. |
| 02:38 → 02:41 |
There were sacrifices that continually |
| 02:41 → 02:45 |
HAD to be made for sin. |
| 02:45 → 02:48 |
There were laws of cleanliness and uncleanliness. |
| 02:48 → 02:51 |
There were festivals that needed to be celebrated with |
| 02:51 → 02:54 |
the first-fruits of the offering |
| 02:54 → 02:58 |
that came to the Temple of the Lord. That house where God |
| 02:58 → 03:01 |
had placed His Name on earth |
| 03:01 → 03:04 |
was the center and the focus of |
| 03:04 → 03:08 |
everyday life for the Old Testament believer. |
| 03:08 → 03:11 |
The Law and all its |
| 03:11 → 03:14 |
requirements were the driving force |
| 03:14 → 03:18 |
of the believer's life and they consumed |
| 03:18 → 03:21 |
each and every minute |
| 03:21 → 03:24 |
of what they had to do. |
| 03:24 → 03:27 |
And yet, in the Letter to the Hebrews, |
| 03:27 → 03:31 |
we hear this morning that there WERE those |
| 03:31 → 03:34 |
sacrifices, there WERE those burnt offerings, |
| 03:34 → 03:37 |
there WERE those sin offerings. |
| 03:37 → 03:41 |
They were required each and every day ... |
| 03:41 → 03:44 |
for the sins of the people. |
| 03:44 → 03:47 |
But God had a different plan in mind. |
| 03:47 → 03:51 |
God had a greater plan in mind |
| 03:51 → 03:54 |
to remove people's sins |
| 03:54 → 03:57 |
once and for all. |
| 03:57 → 04:00 |
To send the great High Priest into this world, |
| 04:00 → 04:04 |
who would sacrifice Himself, |
| 04:04 → 04:07 |
for the sins of the world. It WAS the Father's plan, |
| 04:07 → 04:10 |
that the Son would come, the Messiah would come |
| 04:10 → 04:14 |
in the flesh ... |
| 04:14 → 04:17 |
born of a woman ... |
| 04:17 → 04:20 |
born under Law. |
| 04:20 → 04:24 |
To do His will and to accomplish the |
| 04:24 → 04:27 |
forgiveness of sins by His sacrifice once |
| 04:27 → 04:30 |
and for all. |
| 04:30 → 04:33 |
And we see the beauty of God's plan played out |
| 04:33 → 04:37 |
in Scripture. We see how those Old Testament believers |
| 04:37 → 04:40 |
longed for God to accomplish |
| 04:40 → 04:43 |
His will. We heard the prophet Micah this morning |
| 04:43 → 04:47 |
proclaiming to God's people, that that Messiah |
| 04:47 → 04:50 |
was going to come. |
| 04:50 → 04:53 |
That that Messiah was going to come out of the city of |
| 04:53 → 04:57 |
Bethlehem, the smallest |
| 04:57 → 05:00 |
of God's clans. |
| 05:00 → 05:03 |
That He was going to be a great King. |
| 05:03 → 05:06 |
He was going to shepherd His people ... with love, |
| 05:06 → 05:10 |
and with justice. That God was going to send |
| 05:10 → 05:13 |
that Christ into the world. |
| 05:13 → 05:16 |
And Jesus humbled Himself and became obedient |
| 05:16 → 05:20 |
to the Father's will. |
| 05:20 → 05:23 |
He was conceived by the Holy Spirit |
| 05:23 → 05:26 |
in the womb of the virgin Mary. |
| 05:26 → 05:30 |
And the joy that Mary felt we heard about in our Gospel |
| 05:30 → 05:33 |
lesson for this morning. She realized that |
| 05:33 → 05:36 |
God was accomplishing His salvation. |
| 05:36 → 05:40 |
He was bringing peace and forgiveness |
| 05:40 → 05:43 |
to ALL people ... |
| 05:43 → 05:46 |
to ALL generations. They would KNOW that HER son |
| 05:46 → 05:49 |
would be the Savior of the world. |
| 05:49 → 05:53 |
But that was accomplished |
| 05:53 → 05:56 |
because God's eternal Son, |
| 05:56 → 05:59 |
who from the very beginning |
| 05:59 → 06:03 |
of our existence ... |
| 06:03 → 06:06 |
even before ... |
| 06:06 → 06:09 |
as He sat with the rest of the persons of the God-head |
| 06:09 → 06:13 |
and discussed how They would create a universe. |
| 06:13 → 06:16 |
By the power of the Word, |
| 06:16 → 06:19 |
it was created. |
| 06:19 → 06:22 |
And Jesus was there |
| 06:22 → 06:26 |
when light burst forth |
| 06:26 → 06:29 |
out of that darkness. |
| 06:29 → 06:32 |
Throughout the Old Testament history, we see Jesus coming |
| 06:32 → 06:36 |
again and again described as the Angel of the Lord |
| 06:36 → 06:39 |
to those people who needed to be comforted. |
| 06:39 → 06:42 |
That God was going to CONTINUE |
| 06:42 → 06:46 |
to keep His promise. The promise that He made to |
| 06:46 → 06:49 |
Adam and Eve. The promise that He made to Noah. The promise |
| 06:49 → 06:52 |
that He made to Abraham and all of the other patriarchs. |
| 06:52 → 06:55 |
That through one of their seed, |
| 06:55 → 06:59 |
all nations on earth would be blessed. |
| 06:59 → 07:02 |
And God's Son ... |
| 07:02 → 07:05 |
the Eternal ... Almighty ... All-powerful God, |
| 07:05 → 07:09 |
humbled Himself |
| 07:09 → 07:12 |
by taking on ... human ... form. |
| 07:12 → 07:15 |
By coming as |
| 07:15 → 07:19 |
one of us. |
| 07:19 → 07:22 |
It just boggles our mind |
| 07:22 → 07:25 |
to begin to understand that! |
| 07:25 → 07:29 |
But we know |
| 07:29 → 07:32 |
that that was God the Father's will. |
| 07:32 → 07:35 |
Jesus Himself said: |
| 07:35 → 07:38 |
Here is My body; I am prepared to do |
| 07:38 → 07:42 |
Your will and He came into this world |
| 07:42 → 07:45 |
to accomplish what God the Father |
| 07:45 → 07:48 |
had promised. |
| 07:48 → 07:52 |
He obeyed that Law perfectly that God had set up. |
| 07:52 → 07:55 |
He KEPT ALL of God's commands. |
| 07:55 → 07:58 |
He carried out those sacrifices Himself, |
| 07:58 → 08:02 |
He did everything that was |
| 08:02 → 08:05 |
REQUIRED according to the Law. And He did it with a heart |
| 08:05 → 08:08 |
that was filled with devotion, and love. |
| 08:08 → 08:11 |
NOT out of obligation or some sense of duty. |
| 08:11 → 08:15 |
Or even some sense of self-righteousness. |
| 08:15 → 08:18 |
He did what the Father |
| 08:18 → 08:21 |
sent Him to do ... |
| 08:21 → 08:25 |
which was sacrifice Himself for the sins |
| 08:25 → 08:28 |
of all people. |
| 08:28 → 08:31 |
He DID what the Father |
| 08:31 → 08:35 |
desired of Him |
| 08:35 → 08:38 |
and as His children, as His brothers and sisters, |
| 08:38 → 08:41 |
we also will do the same. We know the JOY |
| 08:41 → 08:44 |
that WE have in OUR salvation |
| 08:44 → 08:48 |
and with Mary we want to proclaim the praises of God |
| 08:48 → 08:51 |
in our lives. And we do that |
| 08:51 → 08:54 |
by submitting to what the Father asks of us |
| 08:54 → 08:58 |
by willingly placing ourselves under |
| 08:58 → 09:01 |
His care, in His protection, |
| 09:01 → 09:04 |
and doing His will. |
| 09:04 → 09:08 |
By carrying it out, with hearts that are |
| 09:08 → 09:11 |
devoted to Him, who WANT to be His children, |
| 09:11 → 09:14 |
who WANT to live our lives |
| 09:14 → 09:17 |
in that life of faith that is pleasing to Him |
| 09:17 → 09:21 |
because we KNOW what the sacrifice was. |
| 09:21 → 09:24 |
Our sinful nature says we shouldn't |
| 09:24 → 09:27 |
deny ourselves anything. |
| 09:27 → 09:31 |
If we WANT it, we should go after it, we should GET it, |
| 09:31 → 09:34 |
and we don't care HOW we do it. |
| 09:34 → 09:37 |
Because it's ALL ABOUT ME and it's ALL ABOUT WHAT I WANT |
| 09:37 → 09:38 |
and I don't HAVE TO take care |
| 09:38 → 09:42 |
of my brother or sister next to me. |
| 09:42 → 09:43 |
I don't HAVE to think about |
| 09:43 → 09:46 |
how it's going to affect my family. |
| 09:46 → 09:49 |
I don't HAVE to think about the future. |
| 09:49 → 09:52 |
I'm only concentrated on me, right here, |
| 09:52 → 09:56 |
right now. |
| 09:56 → 09:59 |
Jesus Christ never said that. |
| 09:59 → 10:02 |
But He thought of a world who needed Him. |
| 10:02 → 10:06 |
Think of |
| 10:06 → 10:09 |
the predicament Mary was in. |
| 10:09 → 10:12 |
Think of the responsibility placed |
| 10:12 → 10:16 |
on Joseph. |
| 10:16 → 10:19 |
With the hearts that are devoted to God, |
| 10:19 → 10:22 |
His will, will be done |
| 10:22 → 10:25 |
in the lives of His people. |
| 10:25 → 10:29 |
Because we realize that tremendous sacrifice |
| 10:29 → 10:32 |
that Jesus Christ made in |
| 10:32 → 10:35 |
humbling Himself |
| 10:35 → 10:39 |
by leaving behind the servants |
| 10:39 → 10:42 |
and the attendants of heaven, who were created |
| 10:42 → 10:45 |
to do His will. |
| 10:45 → 10:49 |
By coming into this world, not owning a home, |
| 10:49 → 10:52 |
not having a place to call His own, |
| 10:52 → 10:55 |
relying on the kindness |
| 10:55 → 10:59 |
of strangers, and |
| 10:59 → 11:02 |
the kindness of His friends for His life |
| 11:02 → 11:05 |
and His support. |
| 11:05 → 11:08 |
And yet those same disciples, were the ones who |
| 11:08 → 11:12 |
in His darkess hour, |
| 11:12 → 11:15 |
deserted Him. Left him alone, |
| 11:15 → 11:18 |
to do the Father's will. |
| 11:18 → 11:22 |
And even when Jesus was questioned by |
| 11:22 → 11:25 |
Pilate, as to whether He was a king, |
| 11:25 → 11:28 |
He responded: I AM a King ... but not of this world and |
| 11:28 → 11:32 |
I have at my disposal |
| 11:32 → 11:35 |
thousands of angels |
| 11:35 → 11:38 |
and if that were what God desired, they would be here |
| 11:38 → 11:41 |
to fight. |
| 11:41 → 11:45 |
But that was not God's will. |
| 11:45 → 11:48 |
It was God's will, that He would be |
| 11:48 → 11:51 |
the uncomplaining Lamb ... |
| 11:51 → 11:55 |
alone and solitary. |
| 11:55 → 11:58 |
Sacrificed once for all |
| 11:58 → 12:01 |
for the sins of all people. |
| 12:01 → 12:05 |
And He accomplished |
| 12:05 → 12:08 |
what the Father sent Him to do. |
| 12:08 → 12:11 |
And there we rejoice. |
| 12:11 → 12:14 |
And there we find our comfort ... |
| 12:14 → 12:18 |
because you and I know |
| 12:18 → 12:21 |
that we struggle each and every day |
| 12:21 → 12:24 |
to live according to God's will. |
| 12:24 → 12:28 |
Sometimes we blatantly defy Him ... and say: |
| 12:28 → 12:31 |
I'm NOT going to do Your will. |
| 12:31 → 12:34 |
Sometimes we just neglect it. |
| 12:34 → 12:38 |
And think, well maybe I'll get to it tomorrow. |
| 12:38 → 12:41 |
We don't always follow |
| 12:41 → 12:44 |
what God has asked of us. |
| 12:44 → 12:47 |
But yet, we are here because |
| 12:47 → 12:51 |
we find comfort in the forgiveness of our sins. |
| 12:51 → 12:54 |
It's here that we find |
| 12:54 → 12:57 |
the strengthening of our faith |
| 12:57 → 13:01 |
and the encouragment to live our life |
| 13:01 → 13:04 |
of love to God. |
| 13:04 → 13:07 |
What we do this morning, we have to take with us this |
| 13:07 → 13:11 |
afternoon and continue it tomorrow and the day after |
| 13:11 → 13:14 |
as we remind ourselves of |
| 13:14 → 13:17 |
that great sacrifice |
| 13:17 → 13:20 |
that Christ made ... |
| 13:20 → 13:24 |
that He became flesh ... |
| 13:24 → 13:27 |
and lived among us, is the tremendous |
| 13:27 → 13:30 |
blessing of God. |
| 13:30 → 13:34 |
That He died in our place for the forgiveness of our sins. |
| 13:34 → 13:37 |
It's where we find our comfort |
| 13:37 → 13:40 |
and our joy. And that each and every day |
| 13:40 → 13:44 |
in response to that, by the Holy Spirit |
| 13:44 → 13:47 |
we live a life of faith |
| 13:47 → 13:50 |
dedicated to Christ in this body |
| 13:50 → 13:53 |
fulfilling God's will, waiting |
| 13:53 → 13:57 |
for that day when He is going to come as our |
| 13:57 → 14:00 |
great King and give us our glorified bodies |
| 14:00 → 14:03 |
so that eternally we |
| 14:03 → 14:07 |
may do His will proclaim and praise His Holy Name |
| 14:07 → 14:10 |
for having accomplished His salvation, |
| 14:10 → 14:13 |
having accomplished and given |
| 14:13 → 14:17 |
to us the fruit of our faith ... eternal life. |
| 14:17 → 14:20 |
This week |
| 14:20 → 14:23 |
we celebrate ... Christ's birth ... |
| 14:23 → 14:26 |
knowing His death. |
| 14:26 → 14:30 |
Looking forward to the time when |
| 14:30 → 14:33 |
He is going to end this world and come in |
| 14:33 → 14:36 |
judgment. And each and every day |
| 14:36 → 14:40 |
that we are in these mortal bodies, |
| 14:40 → 14:43 |
may we give praise ... to Christ, |
| 14:43 → 14:46 |
who took on this human flesh. |
| 14:46 → 14:50 |
Who accomplished the Father's will ... |
| 14:50 → 14:53 |
Who sacrificed Himself, |
| 14:53 → 14:56 |
for OUR sins, |
| 14:56 → 14:59 |
so that we, in turn, |
| 14:59 → 15:03 |
can live in faith. |
| 15:03 → 15:06 |
Amen. |
| 15:06 → 15:09 |
Let us rise. |
| 15:09 → 15:13 |
Now may the peace of God which goes beyond all of our |
| 15:13 → 15:16 |
understanding, keep your hearts and your minds and |
| 15:16 → 15:19 |
especially your lives in the one true faith unto life |
| 15:19 → 15:23 |
everlasting. |
| 15:23 → 15:26 |
Amen. |
