The Method of Centering Prayer

00:04 → 00:08

And so, let's look at the guidelines then from

00:08 → 00:11

that perspective. In this talk we are emphasizing

00:11 → 00:14

the method and so you could easily

00:14 → 00:19

get stuck on doing the method just right

00:19 → 00:21

but it's always a relationship

00:21 → 00:25

and that means unlike certain other disciplines

00:25 → 00:27

if you don't do it correctly

00:27 → 00:30

it doesn't matter...It's a help if you do it correctly

00:30 → 00:34

but it doesn't matter because it's your intention that

00:34 → 00:37

counts, and the relationship is with God

00:37 → 00:40

God sees that you're trying hard to do a nice job

00:40 → 00:43

however much you're stumbling

00:43 → 00:46

He's not going to hold your mistakes against you.

00:46 → 00:49

He's looking at your love and through another person

00:49 → 00:51

or a book, or eventually through

00:51 → 00:54

the inspirations of the Holy Spirit you'll correct whatever

00:54 → 00:56

mistakes you're doing. The main thing

00:56 → 00:58

to do is to do it

00:58 → 01:03

The principal method of Centering Prayer

01:03 → 01:05

really is to sit down

01:05 → 01:08

Now, that isn't too hard for most people...

01:08 → 01:13

Once you sit down, then

01:13 → 01:17

the Spirit's got you, especially if you

01:17 → 01:22

you sit there for the 20 or 25 minutes you have agreed upon

01:22 → 01:24

and if you do that every day

01:24 → 01:29

the mistakes and misconceptions will gradually evaporate

01:29 → 01:34

Doing it is the primary discipline.

01:34 → 01:37

But there are ways of doing it that could

01:38 → 01:41

facilitate this sitting there

01:41 → 01:44

and so, let's look at the guidelines

01:44 → 01:48

Now the first guideline is

01:48 → 01:49

Choose a sacred word as a symbol

01:49 → 01:52

of your intention to consent

01:52 → 01:56

to God's presence and action within you.

01:56 → 01:59

Notice please God's presence and action

01:59 → 02:02

so we're working with a dynamic relationship

02:02 → 02:06

a back and forth, an exchange,

02:06 → 02:09

a conversation that has moved to a communion

02:09 → 02:12

or is moving in that direction.

02:12 → 02:16

The second little guideline is

02:16 → 02:22

Sitting comfortably and with eyes closed,

02:22 → 02:25

we settle briefly

02:25 → 02:31

like in this nice chair,

02:31 → 02:35

and then after a few moments of not doing anything

02:35 → 02:40

for maybe ten or fifteen seconds

02:40 → 02:42

of quiet, you introduce

02:42 → 02:45

very gently, very casually

02:45 → 02:50

almost informally, the sacred word you have chosen

02:50 → 02:54

as in the first guideline, that symbolizes

02:54 → 02:56

the consent of your will

02:56 → 03:00

to God's presence and action within

03:00 → 03:02

-they always go together-

03:02 → 03:05

God is not a statue

03:05 → 03:09

He's not a static force within us

03:09 → 03:13

It's a loving relationship

03:13 → 03:15

in faith...and hence

03:15 → 03:18

God's Spirit can do all kinds of things

03:18 → 03:20

suggest all kinds of things

03:20 → 03:22

and He does

03:22 → 03:26

The third guideline is

03:26 → 03:29

When engaged with your thoughts

03:29 → 03:31

return ever so gently

03:31 → 03:33

to the sacred word.

03:33 → 03:37

Well, this is just to say

03:37 → 03:39

to acknowledge the fact that

03:39 → 03:41

there are going to be various thoughts

03:41 → 03:44

feelings, sense perceptions,

03:44 → 03:48

noise in the room, people coughing

03:48 → 03:51

memories, imaginations

03:51 → 03:55

sort of dreaming, all of this

03:55 → 03:58

psychological material you might say

03:58 → 04:01

is going to be flowing down the stream of consciousness

04:01 → 04:04

as you sit there

04:04 → 04:09

and we say it is inevitable, integral

04:09 → 04:12

and normal

04:12 → 04:15

so this is a terribly important point to get

04:15 → 04:16

through our heads if we

04:16 → 04:19

have been trained in the doctrine of distractions

04:19 → 04:22

that distractions somehow are harmful

04:22 → 04:25

or interfere with your prayer

04:25 → 04:27

Now, if you're doing discursive meditation

04:27 → 04:29

you're supposed to be thinking about something

04:29 → 04:31

in particular, then

04:31 → 04:33

other thoughts are distractions

04:33 → 04:36

that interrupt your prayer

04:36 → 04:39

Centering Prayer moves beyond

04:39 → 04:41

that level of awareness

04:41 → 04:46

and it's designed to

04:46 → 04:49

to disregard the ordinary

04:49 → 04:51

thoughts or activities of our ordinary psychological

04:51 → 04:54

day to day awareness

04:54 → 04:56

so you're not on the level that you

04:56 → 04:59

usually are on discursive meditation

04:59 → 05:03

and, hence, you just disregard

05:03 → 05:06

this thought, or these thoughts which

05:06 → 05:08

are more like noise in the

05:08 → 05:10

street or background music

05:10 → 05:13

in the supermarket that you put up with

05:13 → 05:15

and pay no attention to

05:15 → 05:19

But it's important not to resist

05:19 → 05:21

these thoughts

05:21 → 05:27

in other words, it's important to have a joyful attitude

05:27 → 05:29

towards the thoughts

05:29 → 05:30

a friendly attitude

05:30 → 05:33

toward the most dreadful thoughts

05:33 → 05:35

not that you linger over them or act

05:35 → 05:37

them out, but it's important

05:37 → 05:40

that we expect them, and they're normal

05:40 → 05:42

and they're integral, and

05:42 → 05:46

so we receive them all with a smile

05:46 → 05:48

an inward smile

05:48 → 05:52

A jolly attitude

05:52 → 05:54

is recommended

05:54 → 05:57

"Here they go again!, ha, ha, ha."

05:59 → 06:03

The reason for this is that any emotional

06:03 → 06:06

frustration, or annoyance, or

06:06 → 06:09

distress or grief, is not

06:09 → 06:12

appropriate because that is another kind

06:12 → 06:15

of thought, because it's emotionally charged

06:15 → 06:19

is more of a hindrance to entering into

06:19 → 06:23

interior silence which is the proximate goal of this prayer

06:23 → 06:26

than any number of casual thoughts that go by.

06:26 → 06:29

So, as soon as you're annoyed you have a second thought

06:29 → 06:32

which is much more disturbing

06:32 → 06:35

than the first one... So there's really great

06:35 → 06:38

wisdom in taking for granted

06:38 → 06:41

that there are going to be lots of thoughts, endless thoughts

06:41 → 06:45

and that with practice you can disregard most of them

06:45 → 06:49

Finally, and there wouldn't be time

06:49 → 06:54

in an introductory workshop

06:54 → 06:59

to do this....but

06:59 → 07:01

it's crucial to have some kind of follow-up

07:01 → 07:04

You can only say so much in a six hour

07:04 → 07:08

workshop, and all an ordinary person can get

07:08 → 07:11

is barely to get the four principles

07:11 → 07:15

So it's very helpful to have some kind

07:15 → 07:18

of six week program to follow it up

07:18 → 07:20

You can watch the first six tapes if you've got them

07:20 → 07:25

or read six chapters out of Open Mind, Open Heart

07:25 → 07:28

and study them together.
