I am Judge Joan Kohout. |
| 00:03 → 00:08 |
Family Court plays an important role in the lives of our families and children. |
| 00:08 → 00:12 |
It is a court where despair can be replaced by hope. |
| 00:12 → 00:16 |
In my twenty years on the bench, I've tried to do just that. |
| 00:16 → 00:22 |
Young people struggling with addiction, parents caught up in domestic violence, |
| 00:22 → 00:26 |
bitter custody battles and petitions for the protection of abused children. |
| 00:26 → 00:31 |
Are just sampling of what family court judges must face everyday. |
| 00:31 → 00:37 |
But Family Court can also be a place where healing begins, and where the joy of new families |
| 00:37 → 00:43 |
created through adoption is seen. The experience and understanding that I've gained |
| 00:43 → 00:48 |
from twenty years as a Monroe County Family Court Judge, has made me sensitive to the |
| 00:48 → 00:53 |
importance of my role and the need to be firm, yet fair, in my judgments. |
| 00:53 → 00:57 |
But Family Court can not solve all problems. |
| 00:57 → 01:03 |
We must help families make decisions for themselves, through the use of mediation and family conferencing. |
| 01:03 → 01:08 |
We must teach children the skills to peacefully resolve their disagreements. |
| 01:08 → 01:14 |
My commitment to justice for families does not end when my daily court calendar is done. |
| 01:14 → 01:21 |
As an active member of our community, and a past president of the New York State Family Court Judges Association. |
| 01:21 → 01:27 |
I've consistently supported programs designed to strengthen families and keep children out of court. |
| 01:27 → 01:34 |
As a Family Court Judge I've served to the best of my ability. I promise to carry on that effort |
| 01:34 → 01:39 |
And I seek the honor of continuing to serve you for the next 10 years. |
