Transcript for Nelson Mandela describes the concept of Ubuntu

Time Content
00:01 → 00:05

Nelson Mandela. An icon of freedom in Africa and the world.

00:05 → 00:07

an inspiring symbol of tolerance and humanity

00:07 → 00:10

the African tradition of "ubuntu"

00:10 → 00:13

What is ubuntu? It is a universal truth

00:13 → 00:15

it is a way of life

00:15 → 00:18

it underpins the concept of an open society

00:19 → 00:23

Many people regard you as a personification of Ubuntu.

00:23 → 00:26

What do you understand Ubuntu to be?

00:26 → 00:30

In the old days, when we were young,

00:30 → 00:38

a traveller through a country would stop at a village,

00:38 → 00:45

and he didn't have to ask for food or for water.

00:45 → 00:52

Once he stops the people give him food, entertain him.

00:52 → 00:58

That is one aspect of Ubuntu but it has various aspects.

00:58 → 01:05

respect, helpfulness, sharing, community, caring, trust, unselfishness

01:05 → 01:08

one word can mean so much

01:08 → 01:10

this is the spirit of ubuntu

01:10 → 01:15

Ubuntu does not mean that people should not address themselves.

01:15 → 01:17

The question therefore is:

01:17 → 01:23

are you going to do so in order to enable the community around you,

01:23 → 01:25

and enable it to improve?

01:25 → 01:27

These are the important things in life.

01:27 → 01:29

And if one can do that,

01:29 → 01:34

you have done something very important which will be appreciated.
