Kuduro. An Angolan Urban Music
We have a rhythm
mainly from the coast
I met it in Malange (Angola) during the carnival
The magnitude of the drumming played by the elders
Thank God that I was born in an age when Africa
already knows a bit about electronics
only to add a bit of emphasis in the rhythm
The first time I gave it the name Kuduro
I was watching a film with Jean Claude Van Damme
On a scene where he does, or he did,
as though as if he was drunk...
And so he danced...
We saw that, we thought it was a gag...
I made the programming for the music
And then I made the first song
those steps and stuff...
and I created a more sweetened rhythm
then I built the choreography
and today here it is... Kuduro
it was my desire to make something
based on the influence we had from foreign music
from funk, house music
I used to dance, but with the African rhythm
over those international beats
and so I decided to create my own style,
also instructing the dancers.
I learned to play the piano
I made something that is mine
I thought that creating something mine
I would be developing my identity more than if I just imitate,
for example, Michael Jackson. That's it.
