Did you know that October is the month where we celebrate
World Blindness Awareness, Breast Cancer Awareness, and Domestic Violence Awareness?
Of course people all over are excited about Halloween,
Ben is personally looking forward to daylight savings time ending,
and some of us are looking towards watching Aries jackknife,
I, I mean launch.
But October also means World Space Week.
Held every year since being established in 1999,
World Space Week specifically coincides with the launch of Sputnik on October 4th of 1957,
and the signing of the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States
in the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies,
which was signed on October 10th of 1967.
Being that this is the 10th anniversary of World Space Week,
there are a large number of activities going on.
Some of these highlights include:
events to celebrate the International Year of Astronomy,
students observing the moon to win prizes,
week long space celebrations across all the Hawaiian islands,
people sending messages into space via SentForever,
President Obama is hosting a star party at the White House on October 7th,
Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberté broadcasts from the International Space Station,
and NASA's LCROSS mission impacts the Moon on October 9th.
So far there are 443 events reported in 51 countries,
and more to pop up as the week goes on.
You can keep checking www.worldspaceweek.org for celebrations in your area.
And even if you are not near anything formal,
please feel free to grab your friends and family, go outside and just look up.
Tell them what''s going on... how you feel about space
and maybe we can all inspire someone.
