Time Content
00:02 → 00:05

... Recorded for us

00:06 → 00:09

in the Second Chapter,

00:09 → 00:13

where we read from Verse 21:

00:13 → 00:16

ON THE EIGHTH DAY WHEN IT WAS TIME TO CIRCUMCISE HIM,

00:16 → 00:19

HE WAS GIVEN THE NAME JESUS, THE NAME THE ANGEL HAD GIVEN

00:19 → 00:23

HIM, BEFORE HE HAD BEEN

00:23 → 00:26

CONCEIVED. This is the Word of our Lord; Let us pray:

00:26 → 00:29

This is the day

00:29 → 00:33

that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and

00:33 → 00:36

be glad in it. Amen.

00:36 → 00:39

Pastor Dave motions

00:39 → 00:42

for the congregation

00:42 → 00:46

to be seated.

00:46 → 00:49

Dear Followers of our Lord and Savior,

00:49 → 00:52

Jesus Christ.

00:52 → 00:56

We've all been in that predicament

00:56 → 00:59

when someone comes running up to us,

00:59 → 01:02

talking to us, they're glad to see us

01:02 → 01:06

and we are standing there with our minds racing

01:06 → 01:09

because their face looks familiar and

01:09 → 01:12

we don't have a clue

01:12 → 01:15

as to who they are! And then we try

01:15 → 01:19

that game that we think is not going to fool them ...

01:19 → 01:22

where we just kind of feel out where they're from, and

01:22 → 01:25

why they would be talking to us this way and

01:25 → 01:29

when we get on the other side of that, we see right

01:29 → 01:32

through that. We can tell by the look on

01:32 → 01:35

the person's face, that

01:35 → 01:39

they do not have a clue what your name is.

01:39 → 01:42

(Pause)

01:42 → 01:45

And then you feel horrible if you blurt out the wrong name.

01:45 → 01:48

Because we're all very attached

01:48 → 01:52

to that name that is ours.

01:52 → 01:55

That name that defines us.

01:55 → 01:58

It may not be our favorite name ... may not be one of

01:58 → 02:02

those that is picked as "the best of the decade".

02:02 → 02:05

You know Sarah got knocked out in the Number 1 spot

02:05 → 02:08

in the last 10 years.

02:08 → 02:12

But Jacob, for boys' names, still is the top one.

02:12 → 02:15

And we may not have those names. We may have names

02:15 → 02:18

that carry our family heritage with them. We may

02:18 → 02:21

have names that were given us

02:21 → 02:25

because of someone special that our parents knew.

02:25 → 02:28

And maybe we didn't receive names because of

02:28 → 02:31

other people our parents knew.

02:31 → 02:35

So they stayed away from them.

02:35 → 02:38

But our names are important to us. We want

02:38 → 02:41

people to remember them. We want people to use them.

02:41 → 02:45

We don't want people to abuse them,

02:45 → 02:48

turn them into nicknames or shorten them,

02:48 → 02:51

or lengthen them. And we see the same thing is so true of

02:51 → 02:54

our Lord and Savior's name. Because just think

02:54 → 02:58

how many times each day

02:58 → 03:01

you hear ...

03:01 → 03:04

the Name of your Lord.

03:04 → 03:08

Probably not in the best context ...

03:08 → 03:11

or the way that you would not choose to use that name,

03:11 → 03:14

but it's out there everywhere!

03:14 → 03:18

We remind ourselves that, we as the children of God,

03:18 → 03:21

treasure that name ...

03:21 → 03:24

just as Mary treasured that name, and Luke reminds us

03:24 → 03:27

in fulfillment of the Law, on the day that Jesus

03:27 → 03:31

went to be circumcised, He was

03:31 → 03:34

given the name Jesus. It was a name that

03:34 → 03:37

Mary and Joseph didn't have to struggle over

03:37 → 03:41

or wonder about who or what they should call Him.

03:41 → 03:44

The angel Gabriel

03:44 → 03:47

had given that name to Mary

03:47 → 03:51

and reminded them that His purpose in life

03:51 → 03:54

was to come as the Savior.

03:54 → 03:57

The One who had been promised by God.

03:57 → 04:00

The One who was there to fulfill the Law.

04:00 → 04:04

And we see that we have read those passages

04:04 → 04:07

familiar to us again throughout

04:07 → 04:10

the Advent and Christmas season. The angel came to Mary

04:10 → 04:14

at a time when she must have just been TERRIFIED

04:14 → 04:17

with this prospect

04:17 → 04:20

of the news. But yet, in faith,

04:20 → 04:24

she believed what the Lord had said.

04:24 → 04:27

She trusted in Him.

04:27 → 04:30

Joseph also believed what God had told him through the

04:30 → 04:33

angel and trusted what God had said,

04:33 → 04:37

because they were the instruments that God

04:37 → 04:40

was using in the fulfillment

04:40 → 04:43

of the promises that began to Adam and Eve.

04:43 → 04:47

That the seed ... One of his seed,

04:47 → 04:50

would be the One who would bring

04:50 → 04:53

blessing to all people. Who would save them

04:53 → 04:57

from the sin that Adam and Eve had brought

04:57 → 05:00

into the world. And the thing that they would infect

05:00 → 05:03

their children with and their grandchildren would be

05:03 → 05:06

infected with ... down to each and every person born

05:06 → 05:10

into this world.

05:10 → 05:13

They're born in sin. Inherited from their parents.

05:13 → 05:16

And so important it is for us to hear

05:16 → 05:20

the name JESUS,

05:20 → 05:23

because He IS the Savior.

05:23 → 05:26

The One who saves ... and that comes back

05:26 → 05:30

to us time and time again. Think of our use of it

05:30 → 05:33

already even in our worship this morning.

05:33 → 05:36

That we have heard the Name of God's Son

05:36 → 05:37

placed upon us as we began this service.

05:37 → 05:41

That we have turned to Christ

05:41 → 05:44

for the forgiveness of our sins.

05:44 → 05:47

That we have called on Jesus knowing that

05:47 → 05:50

we ARE sinners and HE IS our only Hope. We have

05:50 → 05:54

HEARD HIS words of forgiveness

05:54 → 05:57

spoken by me, His called servant.

05:57 → 06:00

What a wonderful reminder that is to us

06:00 → 06:04

that He has cleansed us

06:04 → 06:07

from our sins. Because that was the work

06:07 → 06:10

that God had called Him to do. That was how God

06:10 → 06:14

had prepared the world to receive Him.

06:14 → 06:17

Speaking through the prophets, speaking through David.

06:17 → 06:20

That there would be one of his descendents that

06:20 → 06:23

would rule on His throne forever.

06:23 → 06:27

And Jesus now sits at that throne having

06:27 → 06:30

accomplished and fulfilled ALL of the Law of God.

06:30 → 06:33

Carried out God's plan of salvation.

06:33 → 06:37

As the Apostle reminded us in the Letter to the Romans,

06:37 → 06:40

it was by His resurrection,

06:40 → 06:43

that He has been proven to be the Son of God.

06:43 → 06:47

And that He now sits at the right hand of God

06:47 → 06:50

having placed everything under His feet.

06:50 → 06:53

He is our Ruler, our Supreme God and Authority.

06:53 → 06:54

Because He saved us ...

06:54 → 06:57

to be ...

06:57 → 07:01

His own.

07:01 → 07:04

And He did that in fulfillment of the Law.

07:04 → 07:07

And how important it was, that God had chosen Mary,

07:07 → 07:11

to be His mother,

07:11 → 07:14

and Joseph, to be His step-father

07:14 → 07:17

to fulfill the requirements that God had set.

07:17 → 07:21

Because they were righteous people ...

07:21 → 07:24

they were believers ... they carried out

07:24 → 07:27

the worship that God had set out for them. Jesus

07:27 → 07:30

Himself, at 8 days old, was not going to arrange

07:30 → 07:34

His own circumcision.

07:34 → 07:37

But yet, Mary and Joseph did what the Law required.

07:37 → 07:40

The fulfillment of God and

07:40 → 07:44

fulfillment of all that God had asked of them.

07:44 → 07:47

We know that they continued to instruct Him.

07:47 → 07:50

They continued to go to the temple and

07:50 → 07:54

bring Him with them,

07:54 → 07:57

so that they could worship together there as a family.

07:57 → 08:00

That He was instructed with them with what God desired.

08:00 → 08:03

And we're reminded of the importance of our own

08:03 → 08:07

instruction ... teaching others

08:07 → 08:10

of the Name of Jesus. Beginning in our homes.

08:10 → 08:13

Beginning with our families. Beginning with our children.

08:13 → 08:17

Sharing and reminding them of what God has done and

08:17 → 08:20

what God wants from them and

08:20 → 08:23

expects of them. That they have a Savior

08:23 → 08:27

because THEY CANNONT KEEP THE LAW.

08:27 → 08:30

But that doesn't mean that we take those 10 Commandments and

08:30 → 08:33

just throw them out, and say that they don't apply.

08:33 → 08:36

They certainly teach and instruct us how God wants us

08:36 → 08:40

to live daily.

08:40 → 08:43

To give glory to Him. To praise that Holy Name.

08:43 → 08:46

To show our thanks for all that Jesus has done.

08:46 → 08:50

And we point our children to those Commandments and say:

08:50 → 08:53

This is what God wants from you.

08:53 → 08:56

First and foremost, to put Him as the Ruler and

08:56 → 09:00

Lord of your life.

09:00 → 09:03

And secondly, to treasure that Name

09:03 → 09:06

that is His. That Holy,

09:06 → 09:09

precious Name.

09:09 → 09:13

And I think we, as Christians, have to admit, THAT IS

09:13 → 09:16

a HUGE battleground for us.

09:16 → 09:19

Because how many of us even as adults,

09:19 → 09:23

have given up defending that Name

09:23 → 09:26

from the people that we've come in contact with?

09:26 → 09:29

And it always surprises me,

09:29 → 09:33

the reaction, that Christians have

09:33 → 09:36

to Muslims ...

09:36 → 09:39

who don't want anyone misusing that name of Allah.

09:39 → 09:42

And yet ...

09:42 → 09:46

it's their god and they will defend it

09:46 → 09:49

to the end.

09:49 → 09:52

And we, as Christians, let people around us

09:52 → 09:56

take the Name of God and drag It down

09:56 → 09:59

into hell itself.

09:59 → 10:02

It's a reminder to us

10:02 → 10:06

that that's the Name of our Savior.

10:06 → 10:09

That's the ONLY Name by which people

10:09 → 10:12

will be saved. That is the ONLY PATH

10:12 → 10:15

that is open to eternal life.

10:15 → 10:19

It has been GIVEN to us.

10:19 → 10:22

It has been REVEALED to us. And that's why

10:22 → 10:25

it's so precious to us. Because Jesus

10:25 → 10:29

fulfilled the Law that we couldn't fulfill.

10:29 → 10:32

We couldn't save ourselves. Yet,

10:32 → 10:35

He willingly gave His life.

10:35 → 10:39

We can't raise ourselves from the dead. We can't even

10:39 → 10:42

raise our loved ones that we wish we could,

10:42 → 10:45

who are no longer here.

10:45 → 10:48

But Jesus raised from the dead, by the Power

10:48 → 10:52

of God in His strength.

10:52 → 10:55

He has ascended to heaven and He is our Lord.

10:55 → 10:58

He IS our Savior.

10:58 → 11:02

And we teach that. We express that in EVERYTHING we do

11:02 → 11:05

in our life. It is what brings us joy.

11:05 → 11:08

It is what brings us comfort.

11:08 → 11:12

When we leave this building today ...

11:12 → 11:15

that Name of the Lord that was spoken of,

11:15 → 11:18

in our Old Testament Lesson gets placed on us.

11:18 → 11:22

The Covenant God, the Savior God.

11:22 → 11:25

whose Face now turns to us and shines on us.

11:25 → 11:28

No longer turns to us with

11:28 → 11:31

angry eyes of destruction.

11:31 → 11:35

But with eyes of love.

11:35 → 11:38

He gives us His peace. It's placed upon us.

11:38 → 11:41

It covers over us. It IS

11:41 → 11:45

the sweetness of our life.

11:45 → 11:48

That Name Jesus means: He saves.

11:48 → 11:51

May we give all glory to God

11:51 → 11:55

for fulfilling His Law.

11:55 → 11:58

For keeping His Word.

11:58 → 12:01

For sending to us, the thing that we needed

12:01 → 12:04

first and foremost. A Savior,

12:04 → 12:08

who is Christ, the LORD.

12:08 → 12:11

Amen.

12:11 → 12:14

Now may the

12:14 → 12:18

peace of God which goes beyond all of our understanding,

12:18 → 12:21

keep your hearts and your minds, and especially your lives,

12:21 → 12:24

in the one true faith unto life everlasting.

12:24 → 12:28

Amen.
