Transcript for Scratch Workshop Video

Time Content
00:02 → 00:04

Hi, I'm Tammy. -And I'm Jay.

00:04 → 00:10

And we just spent the last several weeks working with a group of 13 year olds doing a Scratch Workshop.

00:10 → 00:15

Asi que ahora vamos a compartir con ustedes como nos fue en el taller and a little of the ups and the downs, and everything else.

00:21 → 00:28

First we did an icebraker. People got into pairs, and taught each other something they knew.

00:28 → 00:31

Like how to say "I love you" in Chinese,

00:33 → 00:35

And how monkeys groom each other.

00:42 → 00:46

We let everyone take the mouse, and point to something they noticed on the screen.

00:58 → 01:04

We show sample projects that come with Scratch, and sometimes, we show ones that we made.

01:04 → 01:09

For example, here Jay is showing a digital mask project that he made.

01:10 → 01:14

And now I'm showing my Scratch aerobics project

01:19 → 01:24

Then we showed how the scratch blocks work, by doing something similar to what's in the getting started guide.

01:37 → 01:41

The vast majority of the time was spent Scratching on computers

01:41 → 01:46

We were there to help when people needed it, but after a little while they started to help each other.

02:04 → 02:06

We got cameras out

02:10 → 02:12

and took lots of pictures.

02:19 → 02:26

We brought all of their pictures into Scratch and started working on a community project together.

02:31 → 02:34

The project was situated in their school hallway.

02:35 → 02:41

Some people took more pictures, cut them out, and created all sorts of projects with their pictures in them.

02:48 → 02:53

To make sure everyone at least has a place to start, we like to give project themes.

02:53 → 02:54

Like dance...

02:56 → 02:58

...animate your name...

02:58 → 03:01

...or make a project all about yourself.

03:05 → 03:10

We always leave time for them to get together and talk about their projects.

03:43 → 03:48

One thing that was really important to us was having a supportive and collaborative environment.

03:48 → 03:55

So we found it useful to have a round table and a projector where we could all come together and share ideas.
