Transcript for Digital Open Winners: Raymond Zhong and Aatash Parikh,

Time Content
00:00 → 00:04

Actually, a lot of technology that I like to use isn't necessarily digital, so....

00:04 → 00:06

For example, like, I've got my favorite notebook.

00:06 → 00:08

And, actually, what I can do with this is

00:08 → 00:11

I can pull the pages out and I can stick them back in.

00:11 → 00:14

Boing Boing teamed up with Institute for the Future and Sun Microsystems

00:14 → 00:16

to create the Digital Open,

00:16 → 00:20

an online tech expo for teens 17 and under around the world.

00:20 → 00:22

Now, meet one of the winners.

00:22 → 00:26

So our project is called msjhs.net at our school. It's our student portal.

00:26 → 00:32

Basically, it's the one place online to find everything related to student life at our school.

00:32 → 00:35

Our website is powered by the Drupal content management system.

00:35 → 00:37

Any organization, like a club, specifically--

00:37 → 00:40

You know, we have 65 clubs on campus--

00:40 → 00:43

And so any club can go in and make their own account,

00:43 → 00:45

and they can put their own information out there.

00:45 → 00:49

Actually, a lot of technology that I like to use isn't necessarily digital, so....

00:49 → 00:51

For example, like, I've got my favorite notebook.

00:51 → 00:53

And, actually, what I can do with this is

00:53 → 00:56

I can pull the pages out and I can stick them back in.

00:56 → 01:01

When I have homework assignment, and I'm interested in the material, and I want to learn more about it,

01:01 → 01:03

then I go on Wikipedia, there are hyperlinks,

01:03 → 01:06

and I can just find out everything about the stuff.

01:06 → 01:10

Wikipedia ends up being the average of society's knowledge.

01:10 → 01:13

And since so many people are on Wikipedia, errors do get noticed.

01:13 → 01:18

And it really brings home the fact that knowledge is really just what we agree upon.

01:18 → 01:22

I guess the way I've been looking at the Internet is as a way of building communities with people.

01:22 → 01:26

There's a lot of power in building communities that are built around

01:26 → 01:28

solving world problems.

01:28 → 01:30

And so I think in the future, you know,

01:30 → 01:34

we can use technology to tap into

01:34 → 01:36

some of the knowledge and intelligence that we have around the world

01:36 → 01:40

that doesn't get to speak out too much. But through technology we can

01:40 → 01:42

access that intelligence.

01:42 → 01:45

Yeah, I think the possibility of people who are

01:45 → 01:48

really passionate and really good at doing things,

01:48 → 01:50

the possibility that they'll be able to get together and work together

01:50 → 01:53

really means that we'll be able to solve a lot of problems in the world.

01:53 → 01:55

If you have an idea for something, you know,

01:55 → 02:00

start a project, start exploring, do something crazy.

02:00 → 02:02

You'll have fun, you'll learn a lot.

02:02 → 02:04

I guess if there are any high school students out there,

02:04 → 02:06

I'd just like to tell them, yeah,

02:06 → 02:08

high school is a great place to get started on these sort of things.

02:08 → 02:13

And you can do really great things. Just make sure that you keep trying

02:13 → 02:15

and you find something you really love to do.
