The Municipality of Veles is one of the rare municipalities in Macedonia with
its own IT development department.
Among other projects, the Municipality has participated in this one as well,
which is located here, in the local city library,
and is actually a free internet access point.
What is particularly important in the development of these places,
as free public internet access points,
is the opportunity to provide the local population with access to the internet
and thus contribute to the increase of their knowledge and skills
and indirectly influence the competitiveness of the workforce.
There is another very important benefit;
the increased level of trust between the local authorities and the citizens.
All the improvements made by leveraging information technology
are aiming at enhancing transparency and accountability,
i.e. making all the information on a local level available to the citizens.
In a situation of a not so great computer literacy,
and in a situation of a not so high internet penetration rate
among the local population, certainly that knowledge is key,
and these public points play a special role exactly in this segment.
Therefore, by developing these concepts and performing activities for the creation of
places where citizens would be able to use the internet free of charge,
we are making direct efforts to provide greater access
to information and thus enhance the local democracy.
