The Bechdel Test or the Mo Movie Measure |
| 00:06 → 00:08 |
is a type of litmus test to assess the |
| 00:08 → 00:11 |
presence of women in movies |
| 00:11 → 00:14 |
It originated from Allison Bechdel’s comic |
| 00:14 → 00:16 |
“Dykes to Watch Out For” in 1985 |
| 00:16 → 00:19 |
Here’s how it works, a movie just has to |
| 00:19 → 00:21 |
pass these three simple questions |
| 00:21 → 00:24 |
the first are there two or more women in it |
| 00:24 → 00:25 |
who have names |
| 00:25 → 00:28 |
the second do they talk to each other |
| 00:28 → 00:31 |
and the third, do they talk to each other |
| 00:31 → 00:32 |
about something other then a man |
| 00:32 → 00:34 |
It’s quite extraordinary actually how many |
| 00:34 → 00:37 |
movies don’t pass this test cause it’s not |
| 00:37 → 00:39 |
even a sign of whether it's a feminist movie |
| 00:39 → 00:42 |
or whether it's a good movie just that there is |
| 00:42 → 00:44 |
female presence in it and that they actually |
| 00:44 → 00:46 |
are engaging about things other then men |
| 00:46 → 00:47 |
To prove that this is actually a systemic |
| 00:47 → 00:49 |
problem and not just a few movies here and |
| 00:49 → 00:51 |
there I can show you a couple films that |
| 00:51 → 00:52 |
don’t pass the test |
| 00:52 → 00:55 |
♪ instrumental music ♪ |
| 01:22 → 01:23 |
Okay you get the point |
| 01:23 → 01:27 |
this is only just a few films out of the many |
| 01:27 → 01:28 |
films that don’t pass this test |
| 01:28 → 01:31 |
When I call it a systemic problem what I |
| 01:31 → 01:33 |
mean by this is that it’s not just a few people |
| 01:33 → 01:35 |
here and there that don’t like women or |
| 01:35 → 01:37 |
don’t want women’s stories told but that |
| 01:37 → 01:41 |
rather the entire industry is built upon |
| 01:41 → 01:43 |
creating films and movies that cater to |
| 01:43 → 01:45 |
and that are about men |
| 01:45 → 01:47 |
Next time you go to the movies just ask |
| 01:47 → 01:49 |
yourself these few questions. Are there two |
| 01:49 → 01:50 |
or more women in it and do they have |
| 01:50 → 01:53 |
names? Do they talk to each other? |
| 01:53 → 01:55 |
And do they talk to each other about |
| 01:55 → 01:56 |
something other then a man? |
