Time Content
00:00 → 00:03

Text from the HOLY BIBLE: NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION, used by

00:03 → 00:06

permission of Zondervan Bible Publishers. The sermon text

00:06 → 00:09

is recorded for us in John's Gospel where we read

00:09 → 00:13

the first 15 verses from

00:13 → 00:16

Chapter 6. Sometime

00:16 → 00:19

after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore

00:19 → 00:23

of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias),

00:23 → 00:26

and a great crowd of people followed him

00:26 → 00:29

because they saw the miraculous signs he had

00:29 → 00:33

performed on the sick. Then Jesus went up

00:33 → 00:36

on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples.

00:36 → 00:39

The Jewish Passover Feast was near.

00:39 → 00:42

When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him,

00:42 → 00:46

he said to Philip, "WHERE SHALL WE BUY BREAD

00:46 → 00:49

FOR THESE PEOPLE TO EAT?"

00:49 → 00:52

He asked this only to test him, for he already

00:52 → 00:56

had in mind what he was going to do.

00:56 → 00:59

Philip answered him, "Eight months' wages would not buy

00:59 → 01:02

enough bread for each one to have a bite!"

01:02 → 01:06

Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother,

01:06 → 01:09

spoke up, "Here is a boy with five

01:09 → 01:12

small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far

01:12 → 01:15

will they go among so many?"

01:15 → 01:19

Jesus said, "HAVE THE PEOPLE SIT DOWN."

01:19 → 01:22

There was plenty of grass in that place, and the men

01:22 → 01:25

sat down, about five thousand of them. Jesus

01:25 → 01:29

then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to

01:29 → 01:32

those who were seated as much as they wanted.

01:32 → 01:35

He did the same with the fish.

01:35 → 01:39

When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his

01:39 → 01:42

disciples, "GATHER THE PIECES THAT ARE LEFT OVER.

01:42 → 01:45

LET NOTHING BE WASTED." So they gathered them and

01:45 → 01:48

filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley

01:48 → 01:52

loaves left over by those who had eaten.

01:52 → 01:55

After the people saw the miraculous sign that

01:55 → 01:58

Jesus did, they began to say, "Surely

01:58 → 02:02

this is the Prophet who is to come into the world."

02:02 → 02:05

Jesus knowing that they intended to come and make him

02:05 → 02:08

king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.

02:08 → 02:12

This is the Word of our Lord.

02:12 → 02:15

Let us pray:

02:15 → 02:18

Glorious and Gracious God, may the words of my mouth and the

02:18 → 02:21

meditation of each of our hearts be acceptable in

02:21 → 02:25

your sight, our only source of hope and comfort.

02:25 → 02:28

Amen.

02:28 → 02:31

Pastor Dave

02:31 → 02:35

motions for

02:35 → 02:38

the congregation to be seated.

02:38 → 02:41

Dear Followers of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

02:41 → 02:45

The account that John records for us today is

02:45 → 02:48

one of those familiar accounts

02:48 → 02:51

one of those that we have

02:51 → 02:54

poured over in Sunday School classes, one of those that

02:54 → 02:58

we haven't even thought of as adults.

02:58 → 03:01

The feeding of at least 5,000 people

03:01 → 03:04

by Jesus, when he took the small gift ...

03:04 → 03:08

of five barley loaves and two small fish ...

03:08 → 03:11

and fed soooo many people

03:11 → 03:14

that there were leftovers even that needed

03:14 → 03:18

to be gathered.

03:18 → 03:21

It was a tremendous showing of God's power.

03:21 → 03:24

God's power through His Son, Jesus Christ. That miracle

03:24 → 03:27

speaks clearly to who

03:27 → 03:31

Jesus was. And to what He had come to do.

03:31 → 03:34

And there were people who after that event had even

03:34 → 03:37

wondered if He was The Prophet.

03:37 → 03:41

The Prophet of God

03:41 → 03:44

who had come into the world to share

03:44 → 03:47

the message of God with God's people.

03:47 → 03:51

To bring to them the news of God and

03:51 → 03:54

to tell them what God wanted from them.

03:54 → 03:57

The Prophet that the Jewish people knew

03:57 → 04:00

was going to be someone like Moses who would be raised up

04:00 → 04:04

from among themselves. Someone like Moses

04:04 → 04:07

that we heard in our Old Testament lesson who came and

04:07 → 04:10

brought the people all the commands of God.

04:10 → 04:14

Laid them out before them and said: This is what

04:14 → 04:17

the Lord expects of you.

04:17 → 04:20

This is what you are to do.

04:20 → 04:24

And the people gathered there that day responded:

04:24 → 04:27

joyously and joyfully: This is what we WILL do.

04:27 → 04:30

We will keep the commands of the Lord.

04:30 → 04:33

The Prophet is the One who was to come to

04:33 → 04:37

God's people and share with them the

04:37 → 04:40

knowledge of God, the Word of God and the message of God.

04:40 → 04:43

And we see that's exactly what

04:43 → 04:47

Jesus did. For the past weeks

04:47 → 04:50

in our sermons, we've seen the crowds

04:50 → 04:53

that came to Jesus. We've heard of those people who

04:53 → 04:57

flocked to Him, who followed Him in boats or

04:57 → 05:00

walked around lakes just to

05:00 → 05:03

spend time with Him.

05:03 → 05:06

Because of the miracles that He was doing because of the

05:06 → 05:10

power and the authority that He taught with, they came to

05:10 → 05:13

hear Him, they came to understand what it was ....

05:13 → 05:16

what message He was bringing to them. And we see that

05:16 → 05:20

happening once again as John

05:20 → 05:23

describes this LARGE crowd of people that ... at least

05:23 → 05:26

FIVE THOUSAND PEOPLE ...

05:26 → 05:30

CAME OUT to

05:30 → 05:33

HEAR JESUS SPEAK!

05:33 → 05:36

And Jesus looked

05:36 → 05:40

on those people and He had

05:40 → 05:43

compassion on them. Jesus looked

05:43 → 05:46

on those people and

05:46 → 05:49

He had love for them.

05:49 → 05:53

He was concerned about them. Even concerned with

05:53 → 05:56

their daily needs. Where were He and the disciples

05:56 → 05:59

going to get FOOD to FEED these people?

05:59 → 06:02

He already KNEW what He was going to do, but He

06:02 → 06:06

came to Philip, to test him. He came to Philip

06:06 → 06:09

and said: So where are we gonna get FOOD for all

06:09 → 06:12

of these people? God wanted

06:12 → 06:16

His disciples to THINK! To use

06:16 → 06:19

their God-given common sense

06:19 → 06:22

as to WHO was going to be the one to make the solution

06:22 → 06:26

for the day. He

06:26 → 06:29

comes to Philip to test him. Do you think Philip passed?

06:29 → 06:32

We couldn't get enough money

06:32 → 06:35

if we had months of wages to give any

06:35 → 06:39

one of these people, each one of them ... a bite.

06:39 → 06:42

Is that our response

06:42 → 06:45

so often to God's tests in our life? I don't

06:45 → 06:49

wanna be tested. God You should know that I love You.

06:49 → 06:52

God You know I'm smart. You know I'm one of the best

06:52 → 06:55

children You ever had.

06:55 → 06:59

Just like Philip ... I dunno what we're gonna do.

06:59 → 07:02

We can't do it. When standing in the presence

07:02 → 07:05

of the Son of God ...

07:05 → 07:08

do we even think to let the Son of God do His work!

07:08 → 07:12

He could just as easily have turned

07:12 → 07:15

to Jesus Christ and said: On our own

07:15 → 07:18

we can't do this. But YOU can.

07:18 → 07:22

Hadn't he SEEN

07:22 → 07:25

what Christ was doing?

07:25 → 07:28

Hadn't he witnessed those miracles? Hadn't he been there

07:28 → 07:32

as those crowds came up? For what purpose and

07:32 → 07:35

for what reason?

07:35 → 07:38

Isn't it amazing how often those who are so close

07:38 → 07:39

to Christ ...

07:39 → 07:42

can push Him so far away.

07:42 → 07:46

Or rely on their own sensibilities

07:46 → 07:49

and their own minds to figure out

07:49 → 07:52

what needs to be done. But yet Jesus has

07:52 → 07:56

compassion on people. He has compassion on Philip.

07:56 → 07:59

He has compassion on Andrew

07:59 → 08:02

who points to this little kid

08:02 → 08:06

with a few loaves of bread and some fish.

08:06 → 08:09

Shrugging shoulders.

08:09 → 08:12

.... Whatta we gonna do?

08:12 → 08:15

Doesn't say: Jesus do the work.

08:15 → 08:19

But yet Jesus had compassion

08:19 → 08:22

not only on His disciples,

08:22 → 08:25

but all of those thousands of people that were there

08:25 → 08:29

and He said: Have them sit down.

08:29 → 08:32

You who won't turn to Me,

08:32 → 08:35

I will SHOW you what I can do.

08:35 → 08:39

I will SHOW you my love.

08:39 → 08:42

You have all of those people go and sit down and

08:42 → 08:45

we're gonna start passing out food.

08:45 → 08:48

I wonder what went through Philip's mind

08:48 → 08:52

as Jesus

08:52 → 08:55

kept providing bread

08:55 → 08:58

and kept providing fish for all of those people that

08:58 → 09:02

Philip thought they couldn't feed. Or Andrew who said:

09:02 → 09:05

Here we got this little kid with this little offering

09:05 → 09:08

that Jesus Himself turned into

09:08 → 09:12

a miraculous feeding of at least five thousand people.

09:12 → 09:15

And the people KNEW

09:15 → 09:18

where that food came from.

09:18 → 09:21

The people KNEW that Jesus

09:21 → 09:25

had performed a miracle among them. They wanted Him

09:25 → 09:28

to be king. They wanted to make Him a king by force. They

09:28 → 09:31

wanted to come to Him and set Him up as their earthly ruler.

09:31 → 09:35

But that's not what Jesus had come for.

09:35 → 09:38

That wasn't the great miracle

09:38 → 09:41

that He wanted them to see.

09:41 → 09:45

Because the miracle that He had come to perform

09:45 → 09:48

was the miracle of His resurrection from the dead.

09:48 → 09:51

Having sacrificed Himself

09:51 → 09:54

for humanity's sins

09:54 → 09:58

and in love for them that He had given them

09:58 → 10:01

His life. Shed the blood.

10:01 → 10:04

That goes back to that Old Testament lesson

10:04 → 10:08

for God's people. Yes, they wanted to do the will and

10:08 → 10:11

the work of God

10:11 → 10:14

but yet, they still needed to make sacrifices

10:14 → 10:18

for their sins. They STILL needed

10:18 → 10:21

to SHED blood. And it was

10:21 → 10:24

the Father who SHED the Son's blood on the Cross of Calvary

10:24 → 10:27

so that everyone's sins would be forgiven.

10:27 → 10:31

So that everyone's sins would be washed away.

10:31 → 10:34

And then the miracle

10:34 → 10:37

was that Jesus Christ was raised to life!

10:37 → 10:41

THAT was the miracle Jesus

10:41 → 10:44

came to perform! The miracle

10:44 → 10:47

of bringing faith in Him to people's hearts

10:47 → 10:51

so that they would have eternal life.

10:51 → 10:54

Not that He was JUST here to take care of

10:54 → 10:57

their physical needs, their daily needs ....

10:57 → 11:01

to make sure that people weren't hungry ... or thirsty,

11:01 → 11:04

but that people were satisfied on the Word and

11:04 → 11:07

the Will of God.

11:07 → 11:10

He came as their Lord and Savior and He showed that

11:10 → 11:14

to people in His compassion and by His miracles.

11:14 → 11:17

And we remind ourselves today

11:17 → 11:20

to TRUST in that compassion. To TRUST

11:20 → 11:24

in those miracles. To turn to God

11:24 → 11:27

in the times in our life when He may be testing us.

11:27 → 11:30

Not to rely and trust in ourselves but to fall

11:30 → 11:34

at His feet and say: God, do Your Work.

11:34 → 11:37

Accomplish what You will.

11:37 → 11:40

I stand here as Your child.

11:40 → 11:43

I stand here saying I am going to follow Your commands

11:43 → 11:47

because of the miracle that You have performed

11:47 → 11:50

by creating faith in me.

11:50 → 11:53

Because of the blessing of eternal life, I am going to

11:53 → 11:57

put into practice each and every one of Your commands and

11:57 → 12:00

live in that faith.

12:00 → 12:03

As the Apostle Paul reminded us in our lesson

12:03 → 12:07

from the Letter to the Ephesians:

12:07 → 12:10

Live a life

12:10 → 12:13

worthy of the calling you have received.

12:13 → 12:16

We have the love and compassion of God

12:16 → 12:20

poured out on us each and every day.

12:20 → 12:23

We need to live in that love.

12:23 → 12:26

We need to look at people with the compassion of Christ.

12:26 → 12:30

Not to see a problem of thousands of people

12:30 → 12:33

who are gathered together and the logistics of everything

12:33 → 12:36

that is going on but to calmly say and turn to God:

12:36 → 12:40

God, take care of this.

12:40 → 12:43

Handle this!

12:43 → 12:46

YOU WHO CAN DO ANYTHING, can

12:46 → 12:49

get me through this.

12:49 → 12:53

To TRUST Him to do His Will and ALLOW Him to do that Will.

12:53 → 12:56

To work WITH the Holy Spirit

12:56 → 12:59

through His strength and His power in our daily lives.

12:59 → 13:03

To turn to God's Son as the TRUE PROPHET.

13:03 → 13:06

Not as an earthly king

13:06 → 13:09

but as the One who came as the King of Kings

13:09 → 13:13

to be Lord of our eternal life.

13:13 → 13:16

Who gives us, and satisfies our need

13:16 → 13:19

of a Savior and comforts us with His love.

13:19 → 13:22

Let us call on that Prophet

13:22 → 13:26

in every day of trouble. Let us call on Him in thanks

13:26 → 13:29

and praise for all of the blessings He has done.

13:29 → 13:32

He IS our compassionate and loving God.

13:32 → 13:36

Let us RESPOND in kind.

13:36 → 13:39

Amen.

13:39 → 13:42

Let us rise.

13:42 → 13:46

Now may the peace of God which goes beyond

13:46 → 13:49

all of our understanding keep your hearts

13:49 → 13:52

and your minds and especially your lives

13:52 → 13:55

in the one true faith unto life everlasting.

13:55 → 13:59

Amen.
