Behind the scenes, elephant trainer Tim Frisco instructs would-be trainers how to dominate elephants and make them perform circus tricks. "Sink that hook into 'em. When you hear that screaming, then you know you got their attention." An elephant trumpets in agony as Frisco's bullhook, with its sharp metal hook and spiked end, tears through her sensitive skin. Frisco, a Carson & Barnes elephant trainer, learned the trade from his father, a former trainer for Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.

DEATH AND DISEASE
These are some of the last pictures of Joyce and Hattie.
Two of the five circus elephants who performed together
in the small traveling circus Vargas.
Both died last week.
It is believed tuberculosis was the cause.
Joyce died at 47 years old.
Hattie was 27.
Way short of the 70 year average life span for elephants.
Over a period of ten months, Joyce shrunk from a masive 8000 pounds
to an amesiated 7000 pounds.
Reports say, both elephants were forced to perform almost until the day of their death.
This photo of 48 year old elephant Joyce was taken May 6th,
when Circus Vargas put on a show in Garden Grove.
Joyce died 3 months later.
L.A. County public health officials say, she died of tuberculosis.
80 % of her lungs were destroyed.
Experts say, even in life 9 year old Heather was probably stunted.
Her body smaller than it should be.
Now lying in the trailer, where she died
somewhere between Nevada and New Mexico yesterday.
It was 94 degrees here yesterday.
Who knows what it was, where they were traveling.
And so heat prostration is certainly a possibility.
Bicycle police found the trailer
rocking back and forth in a hotel parking lot.
It looked inside and found 3 elephants, 8 lamas and little breathing room.
This gives the circuses across America a black eye.
This is exactly what people protest against.
