[piano playing first notes of Star Spangled Banner]
ACLU Presents
Before this reunion in London, these men were Guantanamo detainees in the war on terror.
They were called the worse of the worse.
Yet none of these men were ever charged with a crime.
They were at the wrong place in time - they had the wrong appearance
they practiced the wrong religion
and for that they were kidnapped, detained, interrogated and tortured
without trial or evidence. Now they are free men.
But the American system of due process that is supposed to prove the guilty and protect the innocent
didn't exist for these men.
[music] JUSTICE DENIED - Voices from Guantanamo
Moazzam Begg - I was held for a total of 3 years - 3 years without charge,
without trial, without any explanation
and I was release without charge, without trial or without any explanation
[off camera voice] He is a free man now, but when Moazzam Begg was captured and sent to Guantanamo
he was a British resident helping build a school in Afghanistan.
Now he is getting to know his own kid who was too young to remember their dad.
My youngest daughter recognised who I was because I think my wife must have told her through the photographs who dad is.
but she refused to look at me
and the son that I never seen cried the moment I tried to touch him
because I was just a stranger to him and my wife not exactly the same the night that I´d been taken away from her
Omar Deghayes - I experienced sadness in a state that I never had
cruelty in a depth that I never seen in my life
but you will not live as soon the person anymore
you will live as broken
