I'm Dr.Patty Skinkis, viticulture extension specialist,

00:17 → 00:20

and an assistant professor in the Department

00:20 → 00:22

of Horticulture at Oregon State University.

00:22 → 00:25

One of the goals that I have

00:25 → 00:27

is to work closely with the industry

00:27 → 00:29

and really determine their goals.

00:29 → 00:31

And one of their goals has been

00:31 → 00:34

increasing fruit quality and

00:34 → 00:37

decreasing vine vegetative vigor

00:37 → 00:39

and cost of production.

00:39 → 00:42

But still maintaining a high quality product.

00:42 → 00:44

I have several different projects currently

00:44 → 00:47

going as on-farm trials here in Oregon.

00:47 → 00:50

Largely to meet the needs of the industry.

00:50 → 00:53

And there is one central common theme

00:53 → 00:56

amongst that group of projects that I'm doing.

00:56 → 00:58

And that's canopy management and

00:58 → 01:02

vigor reduction. So I started a couple

01:02 → 01:04

projects to try to manage that

01:04 → 01:06

vigor and try to reduce it and

01:06 → 01:09

reduce cost for growers but also to

01:09 → 01:11

not reduce the quality of fruit.

01:11 → 01:13

One of which is using alleyway

01:13 → 01:15

vegetation management. So managing

01:15 → 01:19

the alleyways between vine rows with grasses.

01:19 → 01:21

So almost as a cover crop.

01:21 → 01:23

How do you manage that space to

01:23 → 01:25

reduce vine vigor?

01:25 → 01:28

Another component also of canopy management

01:28 → 01:30

and vigor management is looking at

01:30 → 01:33

manipulations in the cluster zone of the canopy.

01:33 → 01:36

So we actually go in and remove leaves

01:36 → 01:38

in the cluster zone. And what we do is

01:38 → 01:41

we try to increase that cluster exposure

01:41 → 01:43

to reduce disease and to potentially

01:43 → 01:45

increase fruit quality. So it's a

01:45 → 01:48

very common practice in Oregon vineyards,

01:48 → 01:50

but we're trying to go in and modify how

01:50 → 01:53

it's being done to get more benefits

01:53 → 01:55

in disease reduction. But also

01:55 → 01:57

to allow for reduced pesticide use

01:57 → 02:00

because as we open up this cluster zone

02:00 → 02:02

and people are going through and spraying

02:02 → 02:04

their vineyards, we're able to get better spray

02:04 → 02:06

coverage on those clusters and potentially

02:06 → 02:10

get lower use of pesticides but also to

02:10 → 02:12

allow for lower diseases.
