A Close-Captioned Sermon |
| 00:03 → 00:06 |
Pastor Dave |
| 00:06 → 00:09 |
Let us rise for the reading of this morning's sermon text |
| 00:09 → 00:13 |
recorded for us in Mark's Gospel where we read from |
| 00:13 → 00:16 |
Chapter 6, the first 6 verses. |
| 00:16 → 00:19 |
Jesus left there and |
| 00:19 → 00:23 |
went to his home town accompanied by his disciples. |
| 00:23 → 00:26 |
When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the |
| 00:26 → 00:29 |
synagogue and many who heard him were amazed. |
| 00:29 → 00:33 |
"Where does this man get these |
| 00:33 → 00:36 |
things?" they asked. "What's this wisdom that has been |
| 00:36 → 00:39 |
given him, that he even does miracles! (Excuse me) That he |
| 00:39 → 00:42 |
even does miracles. Isn't this the carpenter? |
| 00:42 → 00:46 |
Isn't this Mary's son and the |
| 00:46 → 00:49 |
brother of James, Joses, Judas and Simon? |
| 00:49 → 00:52 |
Aren't his sisters here with us?" And they |
| 00:52 → 00:56 |
took offense at him. Jesus said to them, |
| 00:56 → 00:59 |
"ONLY IN HIS HOME TOWN, AMONG HIS RELATIVES |
| 00:59 → 01:02 |
AND IN HIS OWN HOUSE IS A PROPHET WITHOUT HONOR." |
| 01:02 → 01:06 |
He could not do any miracles there, except |
| 01:06 → 01:09 |
lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. |
| 01:09 → 01:12 |
And he was amazed at their lack of faith. |
| 01:12 → 01:15 |
Then Jesus went around teaching from village |
| 01:15 → 01:19 |
to village. (NIV) This is the Word of our Lord. |
| 01:19 → 01:22 |
Let us pray: |
| 01:22 → 01:25 |
Glorious and Gracious God, |
| 01:25 → 01:29 |
may the words of my mouth and the meditation of each of |
| 01:29 → 01:32 |
our hearts be acceptable in Your sight, |
| 01:32 → 01:35 |
our Lord and Redeemer. Amen. |
| 01:35 → 01:38 |
... The congregation ... |
| 01:38 → 01:41 |
... is seated. |
| 01:41 → 01:44 |
.... (Silence) |
| 01:44 → 01:47 |
... Dear Followers of ... |
| 01:47 → 01:51 |
our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. |
| 01:51 → 01:54 |
In recent weeks, we have witnessed |
| 01:54 → 01:57 |
the death of two interesting |
| 01:57 → 02:00 |
human beings. |
| 02:00 → 02:03 |
One who gave us the moonwalk, |
| 02:03 → 02:07 |
and the other |
| 02:07 → 02:10 |
who told us of men |
| 02:10 → 02:13 |
walking on the moon |
| 02:13 → 02:17 |
And I'm sure that it's very easy for you |
| 02:17 → 02:20 |
to see which of these men was the greatest. |
| 02:20 → 02:23 |
The one who had the most influence in our world. |
| 02:23 → 02:27 |
The one who changed the world in which he lived. |
| 02:27 → 02:30 |
The one that will forever be remembered as |
| 02:30 → 02:33 |
the one and only ... |
| 02:33 → 02:36 |
the greatest ... |
| 02:36 → 02:40 |
the King of Pop. |
| 02:40 → 02:43 |
You laugh. |
| 02:43 → 02:46 |
But to those people who believe THAT |
| 02:46 → 02:50 |
and to those people who looked |
| 02:50 → 02:53 |
to him and found in him |
| 02:53 → 02:56 |
inspiration and joy, |
| 02:56 → 03:00 |
and motivation for their life, |
| 03:00 → 03:03 |
his passing was |
| 03:03 → 03:06 |
extremely shocking to them. |
| 03:06 → 03:09 |
And extremely difficult. |
| 03:09 → 03:13 |
To those who thought he was nothing more |
| 03:13 → 03:16 |
than another contemporary singer, |
| 03:16 → 03:19 |
his passing means very little. |
| 03:19 → 03:23 |
And so they become annoyed |
| 03:23 → 03:26 |
at the fact that they have to |
| 03:26 → 03:29 |
continue to hear about it. |
| 03:29 → 03:33 |
I think THAT very thought |
| 03:33 → 03:36 |
helps us understand |
| 03:36 → 03:39 |
what went on in the synagogue |
| 03:39 → 03:42 |
when Jesus stood up |
| 03:42 → 03:46 |
to read the Scriptures. |
| 03:46 → 03:49 |
Because He read them with authority. |
| 03:49 → 03:52 |
He spoke the Word of God with all of His strength, |
| 03:52 → 03:56 |
and all of His power, and all of His might. |
| 03:56 → 03:59 |
And in that synagogue in His home town, |
| 03:59 → 04:02 |
the people were amazed. |
| 04:02 → 04:06 |
They were amazed at how He spoke. |
| 04:06 → 04:09 |
They were amazed at the miracles that He did. |
| 04:09 → 04:12 |
They were amazed that |
| 04:12 → 04:15 |
He was the son of Joseph and Mary! |
| 04:15 → 04:19 |
A mere carpenter, and they didn't say it |
| 04:19 → 04:22 |
with love and awe in their voice. |
| 04:22 → 04:25 |
Isn't this the brother of James and John and |
| 04:25 → 04:29 |
Judas and Simon? |
| 04:29 → 04:32 |
Aren't His sisters here with us? |
| 04:32 → 04:35 |
Who does this person THINK that he is? |
| 04:35 → 04:39 |
Their lack of faith. |
| 04:39 → 04:42 |
Their lack of trust in whom Jesus was and |
| 04:42 → 04:45 |
what He had accomplished. |
| 04:45 → 04:48 |
not ONLY |
| 04:48 → 04:52 |
caused their Lord to remark |
| 04:52 → 04:55 |
at their lack of faith |
| 04:55 → 04:58 |
but they stopped and limited |
| 04:58 → 05:02 |
His work among them. |
| 05:02 → 05:05 |
He could only lay His hands on a few people. |
| 05:05 → 05:08 |
He could only lay ... no, |
| 05:08 → 05:12 |
He could only heal a few sick people |
| 05:12 → 05:15 |
and He had to leave. |
| 05:15 → 05:18 |
He had to leave because they did not see Jesus |
| 05:18 → 05:21 |
as the Messiah, |
| 05:21 → 05:25 |
as the Prophet of God. |
| 05:25 → 05:28 |
They saw Him as another |
| 05:28 → 05:31 |
human being |
| 05:31 → 05:35 |
It certainly is a reminder to us to ask ourselves: |
| 05:35 → 05:38 |
How do WE see Jesus? How do we REALLY see Him in our lives? |
| 05:38 → 05:41 |
Is He an almighty, all-powerful Lord of our life? |
| 05:41 → 05:45 |
of our life? |
| 05:45 → 05:48 |
Do we go to Him with every concern ... |
| 05:48 → 05:51 |
to put every thought submissive to His will? |
| 05:51 → 05:55 |
Or are we like those people |
| 05:55 → 05:58 |
who heard Him speak in the synagogue |
| 05:58 → 06:01 |
and dismissed Him? |
| 06:01 → 06:04 |
Well, that's his words. They don't apply today. |
| 06:04 → 06:08 |
I don't believe that about Scripture. |
| 06:08 → 06:11 |
What are we saying? |
| 06:11 → 06:14 |
Would that bring honor to God's Messenger? |
| 06:14 → 06:18 |
Would that bring honor and authority |
| 06:18 → 06:21 |
to God's One and Only Son? |
| 06:21 → 06:24 |
Who came into this world to save us? |
| 06:24 → 06:28 |
We really have to look at the way we treat Jesus |
| 06:28 → 06:31 |
and His Word. |
| 06:31 → 06:34 |
Is it just something that passes into our life and |
| 06:34 → 06:37 |
waves over us |
| 06:37 → 06:41 |
and has absolutely no affect? |
| 06:41 → 06:44 |
That we come here week-after-week-after-week |
| 06:44 → 06:47 |
for what reason? |
| 06:47 → 06:51 |
If we leave week-after-week |
| 06:51 → 06:54 |
after week |
| 06:54 → 06:57 |
without putting into practice the things that we've learned. |
| 06:57 → 07:01 |
without having our faith |
| 07:01 → 07:04 |
strengthened. |
| 07:04 → 07:07 |
We're just hearing the Word |
| 07:07 → 07:10 |
and not doing anything about it. |
| 07:10 → 07:14 |
Because then we're just like the children of Israel. |
| 07:14 → 07:17 |
Just like the people that the Lord |
| 07:17 → 07:20 |
told Ezekiel about. He said, |
| 07:20 → 07:24 |
I am sending you to a group of people |
| 07:24 → 07:27 |
a group of people who are rebellious |
| 07:27 → 07:30 |
and obstinate. |
| 07:30 → 07:34 |
They don't want to HEAR what you have to say. |
| 07:34 → 07:37 |
They don't want to KNOW about God. They only want to |
| 07:37 → 07:40 |
hear what they WANT to hear. What makes them happy. |
| 07:40 → 07:43 |
They only want to DO what they WANT to do. |
| 07:43 → 07:47 |
They don't want to be taken out of their comfort zone. |
| 07:47 → 07:50 |
They don't want to think that they could be the ones |
| 07:50 → 07:53 |
whom God has chosen to carry His Word and |
| 07:53 → 07:57 |
to do His work in the world. |
| 07:57 → 08:00 |
How easy it is for all of us to sit here and go through |
| 08:00 → 08:03 |
our life not giving honor |
| 08:03 → 08:07 |
to God's Prophet. |
| 08:07 → 08:10 |
Without taking to heart the Message. |
| 08:10 → 08:13 |
Oh, we love the part that says, |
| 08:13 → 08:16 |
"Your sins are forgiven." |
| 08:16 → 08:20 |
But we don't like the responsibility that comes with |
| 08:20 → 08:23 |
that because we have greater responsibilities in our lives. |
| 08:23 → 08:26 |
We all have better things that we could be doing |
| 08:26 → 08:30 |
with our time than working for the Lord. |
| 08:30 → 08:33 |
But we certainly want the Lord there when we want Him to |
| 08:33 → 08:36 |
work for us. |
| 08:36 → 08:40 |
Just like the Apostle Paul, isn't it? |
| 08:40 → 08:43 |
Who had a messenger from Satan, |
| 08:43 → 08:46 |
a thorn in his flesh, |
| 08:46 → 08:49 |
to stop him from becoming conceited |
| 08:49 → 08:53 |
He went to God and prayed to God at least three times |
| 08:53 → 08:56 |
to remove that from his life |
| 08:56 → 08:59 |
And the Lord said, No. |
| 08:59 → 09:03 |
No. My grace |
| 09:03 → 09:06 |
is sufficient for you. |
| 09:06 → 09:09 |
And in your weakness |
| 09:09 → 09:13 |
I am strong. |
| 09:13 → 09:16 |
Sound familiar |
| 09:16 → 09:19 |
in your own life? |
| 09:19 → 09:22 |
Have you gone to the Lord |
| 09:22 → 09:26 |
and He's said "No" to you? |
| 09:26 → 09:29 |
Or I'm not going to remove what's there? |
| 09:29 → 09:32 |
Do we realize the STRENGTH of God's grace? |
| 09:32 → 09:36 |
The POWER of God. |
| 09:36 → 09:39 |
That we TRUST Him in our lives and |
| 09:39 → 09:42 |
give honor to Him because of the work that He has done. |
| 09:42 → 09:46 |
He backs up His Word with actions. |
| 09:46 → 09:49 |
The actions of His love are |
| 09:49 → 09:52 |
that He has gone to the cross, |
| 09:52 → 09:55 |
He has been raised from the dead, |
| 09:55 → 09:59 |
He sits at the right-hand of God, |
| 09:59 → 10:02 |
He rules all of creation |
| 10:02 → 10:05 |
for the benefit and glory of His church. |
| 10:05 → 10:09 |
He IS going to come again to take US to be with Him. |
| 10:09 → 10:12 |
Not empty words, but words that are |
| 10:12 → 10:15 |
supported with His actions and what He did |
| 10:15 → 10:19 |
from the healing of the sick |
| 10:19 → 10:22 |
in those people in His home town |
| 10:22 → 10:25 |
to the miracles of raising people from the dead, |
| 10:25 → 10:28 |
giving sight to the blind, |
| 10:28 → 10:32 |
letting the deaf hear and the mute speak. |
| 10:32 → 10:35 |
There is His strength and there is His power. |
| 10:35 → 10:38 |
And do we come to God trusting and honoring THAT power? |
| 10:38 → 10:42 |
Or touting our own? |
| 10:42 → 10:45 |
And wanting our own to be better? |
| 10:45 → 10:48 |
Wanting US |
| 10:48 → 10:52 |
to be the ones |
| 10:52 → 10:55 |
to have all of the glory |
| 10:55 → 10:58 |
and to have all of the praise. |
| 10:58 → 11:02 |
Does that bring honor to what Christ has done? |
| 11:02 → 11:05 |
How amazing that Jesus went to His own home town |
| 11:05 → 11:08 |
and preached to them the Gospel |
| 11:08 → 11:11 |
shared with them the Word, |
| 11:11 → 11:15 |
And they rejected Him. |
| 11:15 → 11:18 |
But it didn't stop Him from doing His work. |
| 11:18 → 11:21 |
He continued on. |
| 11:21 → 11:25 |
And the same thing is true for us in a world that is |
| 11:25 → 11:28 |
going to reject Christ |
| 11:28 → 11:31 |
because they don't believe who He was. |
| 11:31 → 11:35 |
They don't see Him as anything more |
| 11:35 → 11:38 |
than another human being |
| 11:38 → 11:41 |
in the history of this world. |
| 11:41 → 11:44 |
They don't see Him as the Son of God. |
| 11:44 → 11:48 |
They don't see Him as the Savior of the world, |
| 11:48 → 11:51 |
But WE DO! |
| 11:51 → 11:54 |
He IS the Lord of our life, |
| 11:54 → 11:58 |
He is the ONE who has brought to us the |
| 11:58 → 12:01 |
forgiveness of sins and eternal life. |
| 12:01 → 12:04 |
And we trust that. |
| 12:04 → 12:08 |
And we believe that |
| 12:08 → 12:11 |
and now is the time for us to take that old sinful nature |
| 12:11 → 12:14 |
and get it under control. |
| 12:14 → 12:17 |
To get off our complacent rear ends |
| 12:17 → 12:21 |
and to do what the Word has said. |
| 12:21 → 12:24 |
To look into our lives and actively ask ourselves |
| 12:24 → 12:27 |
the question: How do I honor |
| 12:27 → 12:31 |
the Prophet of God? |
| 12:31 → 12:34 |
How CAN I continue to |
| 12:34 → 12:37 |
honor the Prophet of God? |
| 12:37 → 12:41 |
What are the ways that I can |
| 12:41 → 12:44 |
bring MORE honor and give MORE glory |
| 12:44 → 12:47 |
to God's Prophet? |
| 12:47 → 12:50 |
Those are questions that if you ask yourselves |
| 12:50 → 12:54 |
and turn to Scripture and study It, |
| 12:54 → 12:57 |
you will find a myriad of answers. |
| 12:57 → 13:00 |
God will give all of us opportunities each day |
| 13:00 → 13:04 |
to choose to honor Him, |
| 13:04 → 13:07 |
or to dishonor Him. |
| 13:07 → 13:10 |
Put our faith into practice, |
| 13:10 → 13:14 |
or to be a rebellious and obstinate people. |
| 13:14 → 13:17 |
Those are the choices. |
| 13:17 → 13:20 |
It's such a clear |
| 13:20 → 13:23 |
and definite mark. |
| 13:23 → 13:27 |
It's one that |
| 13:27 → 13:30 |
we need to examine. |
| 13:30 → 13:33 |
And Scripture tells us today |
| 13:33 → 13:37 |
to make that examination |
| 13:37 → 13:40 |
and to honor God's Prophet. Amen. |
| 13:40 → 13:43 |
Let us rise |
| 13:43 → 13:47 |
Now may the peace of God |
| 13:47 → 13:50 |
which goes beyond all of our |
| 13:50 → 13:53 |
understanding, keep your hearts and your minds and |
| 13:53 → 13:56 |
especially your lives in the one true faith |
| 13:56 → 14:00 |
unto life everlasting. Amen. |
