Every young person wants to get ahead, but some find more bumps than others. For Apollos Ross, gang violence meant dropping out his senior year. Now at 18, he’s making up for lost time with the help of New Door Ventures. A program that helps at risk youth get ready for work and life. He was recently placed in a three-month internship at Mission Pie. Today, his goals are clear.

BY BETTY BASTIDAS The play begins at Garfield Square, at 25th and Harrison streets with pick up soccer in the morning and later the league players, ages 3 to 19 years old play Monday through Friday from 4 to 8pm. For many soccer fans, Garfield's year old turf is considered the best field in the district and so it's rarely empty. This summer players and coaches are more on edge, always worried that budget cuts will mean fewer hours or the loss of its recreation director Jose Guzman. Mission Loc@l talked to Guzman from San Francisco’s Park and Recreations Department to hear about life at Garfield Square. The schedule is listed below.

Por AMANDA MARTINEZ y STEFANIA ROUSSELLE Con la ayuda de sus padres, Iván López, quien asistió al Pratt Institute en Nueva York pero se crió en el Distrito de la Misión, abrió la Galería Artillery Apparel en el 2751 de la calle Misión hace cuatro semanas. Esta semana fue la inauguración del local y los OJOS MISIONEROS estuvieron presentes.

El 13 de junio, Mission Loc@l anunció –¡aun antes de que los ganadores supieran!- los tres finalistas escogidos para presentar una propuesta para el proyecto de arte público que pudiera suceder al mismo tiempo que las mejoras de la calle Valencia. Los residentes se reunirán con los artistas el 23 de julio a las 9 a.m. para una conversación con la comunidad. Más tarde, los tres ofrecerán sus propuestas, las cuales se podrán leer, y en algún momento en el otoño se elegirá al ganador. Primero, observe el video de Misako Inaoka quien fue escogida por su ‘sentido del espacio’.
